Tales from the drug attic
Jul 13, 2010, 13:08
http://www.phinnweb.org/retro/garage/articles/drug_attic.html

Some lovely people have posted Julian's article on garage punk and psychedelia as originally featured in the NME in 1983 and mentioned in Repossessed!
And what a great little read it is too and undeniable proof that Julian was already aspiring to be the great rock n' roll writer he is today, and even before his Lester Bangs/John Sinclair epiphany of the late 80s too.
Well, it certainly passed my lunch hour in a very pleasant way!

I remember reading that article as a callow 14-year-old and being most thrilled when I came across a second hand copy of the Sire re-issue of "Nuggets" (which had, judging by the sleeve, originally been purchased from a cut-out bin).

For a brief moment whilst reading that I almost wished I were a teenager again so I could re-visit the thrill of hearing all this stuff for the first time. Then I remembered how shite adolescence was on almost every other level and snapped out of it pronto. Still a good piece with lots of good recommendations in it though.

Some excellent recommendations and most of those comps have been reissued/rebooted in the last 10 years too, tho this doesn't stop greedy tykes bumping up the price due to their legendary status amongst psych heads.
I remember a particular incident on Camden market once where I asked (why did I have to ask, what's wrong with a price sticker) how much a copy of an English Freakbeat album was to be met with a scornful look from the spanish mod-girl be-paisley bloused vendor who immediately picked up on my northern accent and went 'erm, i do you that for £25'. What....its a fucking bootleg of a repress of a bootleg, are you insane?
Went round the corner and picked it up for £8 in Rhythm Records. See, they didn't used to be called Honest Jons for nothing ya know!

No problemo,
If anyone can find the text to Julian's NME krautrock article (circa 92 - entitled Papa's Goethe A Brand Neu Bag) I would be enormously grateful!

Found this too recently and every song mentioned therein available on Youtube- has made a great compilation! Fascinating to check some blatant ripoffs used in Teardrops and early solo material.

Woah, I didn't expect to read the line "garbage like Blue Cheer" coming from JC's pen. Especially considering he later spoke about their Godlike genius. I like that about Cope, letting the words and opinions flow thick and heavy...if he later disagrees with them, so what? It's better than the "dry wank" that is most criticism. Thanks for the link.

I think he's wrong about David Axelrod, too...but he probably still hasn't changed his mind about that.

I do tend to disagree with Cope's musical opinions sometimes. They often seem borne of some weird dogmatism held over from his punk days, rather than from the music itself. It's the same with Lester Bangs, but unlike with say Pitchfork, I always enjoy reading their opinions whether I agree with them or not.

In this case recommending the totally mad genius that is Pebbles Vol. 3 makes up for any disagreements I might have.

Heh heh, I know what you mean,
I was as surprised as anybody the first time I heard I Can Only Give You Everything (having been familiar with Reynard for some time).
Also check out Maid Of Sugar Maid Of Spice by Mouse & The Traps for a cheeky Bloody Assizes rip!
