Still, for a bohemian musician and writer, 86 represents a genuinely good innings.

A friend down in NYC and a bunch of his musical friends did a benefit for Tuli not long ago.
Probably nobody really thought the money was going to save him, but it was a heartfelt event.

Awesome guy. The Fugs were arguably the first alternative rock act, but alternative back then meant having a real personality and a rebellious streak so strong it'd make Rob Roy blush.

I've loved the Fugs ever since I read Lester Bangs' Godz article 15 or so years ago (whereas the Godz are generally a bit much, even for me). He was mentioned in Allen Ginsberg's Howl: "...who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge this actually happened and walked away unknown and forgotten." I don't know, but I find that pretty cool.

I love the Godz! So much was made of the fact that punk bands weren't required by the business to be virtuosos in order to make their point, but in reality a lot of them were accomplished musicians on the sly (yes Steve Jones and Keith Levene, I'm talking about you!) The Godz genuinely could not play a note, in standard terms, but they still managed to emit a distinctly ramshackle beauty nonetheless.

Having enjoyed the Fugs, the Godz and the Holy Modal Rounders I'm wondering what I should check out elsewhere in the ESP Disk catalogue.

Anyway, cheers for the links. Here's another:

I love Tuli-s proto-Bez spaz-dancing in this clip.

There's always Pearls Before Swine if you haven't already heard 'em. Nowhere near as gonzo as the other acts on that label, though.

I'll tell you one Godz track I flat-out adore: Radar Eyes. I know that's probably their most conventional song and all, but that doesn't make it any less cool. It's what psychedelia would have been like if it were more Velvet Underground-influenced.

And thanks for the Fugs track. I love their far out intros. There was one about lesbians and Nico I found particularly hilarious, but I can't remember what track it was on.

Re. Pearls Before Swine - I do have "Balaklava" and I like it a lot, but as you say it's so different from the majority of stuff on ESP Disk that I don't really consider it part of the same idiom. Also, unlike most of the other bands on that label they were from Florida rather than NYC so they don't have the raggedness and aggression that those loft-dwelling beatniks from the Lower East Side did.

And yes, "Radar Eyes" is wonderful, as are "Soon the Moon" and "Permanent Green Light", a mantric paean to speedfreakery that points towards the motorik rock of Can and Neu!, albeit without the same degree of musical discipline. But what I liked about the Godz in particular is that for a supposedly avant-garde art-rock band there's nothing po-faced or earnest about them - these records generate a sense of abandon and pure fun that is infectious in much the same way as Swell Maps' albums are.

I also have Cromagnon's totally bonkers "Orgasm", but there's enough material there for a seperate thread...

He wasn't very young when he started recording anyway. But sad to see him go I guess, unless he was suffering. quite an innings anyway.

just hope this means the rest of The Fugs catalogue gets released individually. Not sure if the stuff on Electronic Steamboat has been on cd since then.

i'm now wondering if Electromagnetic Steamboat was resupplied or something. I'd assumed it was sold out a while back but it's now reappearing on Amazon etc. Possibly it just didn't have the demand that the Stooges or Television had. or possibly this somehow ties in with Tuli's death.

4 Men with Beards did do at least It Crawled Into My Hand Honest on vinyl in 2007. Not sure if they still do them.
