It's just over halfway through the year and I'm continuing last years trend and feeling increasingly out of touch. Everything I've bought this year seems to be by tried and tested (by me) acts. Nothing by anyone 'new'. So, who'd like to recommend a debut album (or the album where someone's taken an abrupt turn or finally made the record they threatened to) from the first part of this year? And, I'll check it out. (Just the one each. And, I promise to at least investigate them all)

(Just the one each) Emeralds - Does it look like I'm here? Gorgeous electronic lushness. Not sure it'll be up your street though Demdike Stare - Forest of Evil A 12" with one long track a side, so not strictly an album. My favourite release of the year, but I'm not sure how to categorise it. It doesn't sound much like the other stuff of theirs I've heard, so don't buy (for instance) Osmosis and expect it to be of the same standard. Gnod Drop Out with White Hills Whole lotta Neu!ness going on over 4 sides of vinyl. White Hills S/T One of their best releases so far. Probably not a very helpful selection there, but hey ho. Edit: oh bugger, you said one choice each. Sorry.

I would but I'm in the same predicament :) something old-ish but new to me this year though was 'bring me the workhorse' by 'my brightest diamond' aka Shara Worden. A bit 'Jeff Buckley meets operatic PJ Harvey' so, not everyone's cup of tea.

Off the top of my head, the one's that have won this cynic over so far are..... Erland & The Carnival - same - Garage punk/pop psych infused versions of traditional folk songs with a smattering of analogue electronica. Doesn't destroy convention or push the envelope but its engaging and charming enough anyway. MGMT - Conratulations - chart friendly alt-poppers confuse fans and the media with a sprawling baroque psychedelic masterpiece and all the more satisfying for it. Steve Mason - Boys Outside - former Betas man's first solo album (in its truest sense, ie all played by himself) under his own name. A more relaxed and gentler (though lyrically darker) take on the folk-hop Beta Band format.

It's been so annoying I've even tried sneaking up on myself and shouting WHIODOESTHISSOUNDLIKE? It's not helping. Finding the fact that it never really kicks off in the way it feels like its going to really frustrating. And, it degenerates into a bit of a proggy soup at points, but overall rather nice.

Tangerine Dream playing Cluster with Neu! perhaps, still not entirely convinced by Emeralds, this is rather nice, was recommended by someone on here http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/skyramps/days_of_thunder/ Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts , as recommended to me by Squid is a nice listen to in a fairly non direct but getting there eventually way released in the usual us indie batch of 12,

Jonathan Beckett - She’s a Vampire (ep). The final track is my favourite thing this year. Jeni & Billy - Jewell Ridge Coal or Longing for Heaven, both equally good. I can’t count either.

More than one (are you kidding?) Notes from the underground (where it's at): Sun Araw - "On Patrol" Magic Lantern - "Platoon" Pocahaunted - "Make It Real" Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti - "Before Today" A bit less fringey but also "different" in new & interesting ways: Gonjasufi - "A Sufi & A Killer" Sabbath Assembly - "Restored To One" Mondo Drag - "New Rituals" Moon Duo - "Escape" Old fave: The Fall - "Your Future Our Clutter" HH albums of the year so far seem to be Black Tempest & Solus 3!
