I used to have a nice hi-fi, nothing flash but I spent around a grand and a half on it. Now I tend to listen to sounds either in the car or on headphones from my weeny laptop thing. Lately I've been missing my nice hi-fi and just wondered, as we're all in to music, what you guys listen to your sounds on and if you're that bothered about it. |

Well yeah. Individual parts may be a bit shit, but I've made sure that I have things connected as follows: PC - Amp - speakers Seems simple enough, I suppose, but compared to a straightforward PC - Speaker connection, it gives me oodles of control, and the overall output is far better.

Well I got a pretty good 80's era receiver where my RCA CD-burner and my tape deck is hooked up to. But now the only turntable I have is a USB... :( Every time I tried to hook it up to my receiver it sounds distorted. And through my computer I get occasional annoying glitches and stuff. I saw one of these combo turntable/radio things at Right Aid for only $50. Thinking about getting one -- may not be high-quality but probably better than what I have now...

Modular stereo system put together from different systems: Sony amp (surround sound capable), Sony & JBL speakers, don't remember the make of CD player, Technics turntable (in the shop for repairs right now), and a DVD player, VCR and TV as well (used to have 2 VCRS!) I have another all-in-one unit from the 1980's which I sometimes hook in since it has tape decks (too bad the turntable on that one is also busted.) I pretty much replace the pieces one at a time as necessary (the current rig has "evolved" out of past ones.) It would be nice to be able to play music from the computer on the main stereo too -- perhaps by some sort of wireless thingy? But not that important (computer has fancy speakers but is not in a convenient room.) Don't have an iPod either. (Actually my cellphone is supposed to work as an mp3 player -- but I have never bothered to figure out how that works.) Compressed mp3's through earbuds? No thanks. I like the old fashioned "can" headphones.

ideally I like an amp with a treble and a bass knob, or a 5-way eq is 2nd best ... I like 3-way speakers, preferably ones that don't cut the mids the way a lot of 90s technology did (side effect of the early digital age) ... that goes for the amp too ... haven't got my computer hooked up to it, that comes and goes with different home arrangements (currently workspace is not near to stereo space) ... headphones are only for sometimes, my ears are too worn out from gigging and mixing to do any recreational listening that way, and even the stereo is too much lately, but good speakers and decent amp in a nice-sounding room (at least equally important as the gear!) is the way

Did you ask this before? Getting sense of deja vu otherwise. With me it's one of 3 options 1)Front room -computer through a set of Logitech Z4 speakers 2) bedroom - a sony 3 changer midi system can't remember the model name but its about 5 years old 3)mobile - a Sony Atrac walkman with 67 hours of music on random shuffle should probably say 4 since I can watch music videos on my portable size tv, which i've meant to upgrade for the last few years. That's played through a Phillips dvd recorder. Stevo

Just recently upgraded my hifi from an old and battered student-type rig. Now got Mordaunt Short speakers, Cambridge audio amp, Project turntable, Marantz CD player. Not an expensive set-up, but it does the job much better than the previous one, it's been a joy revisiting various CDs/albums since upgrading. I've also got a studio set up in the music room, which, because it is rigged into the PC, is my place to listen to MP3s and digital stuff. This is currently out of commision as my PC is in for repair, my soundcard has fried and my amp has a bad connection :-\

Best.. Technics separates (turntable\cd\receiver\tapedeck...though can't remember when I last played a tape) Mordaunt Short speakers Most listening gets done in the car... Walkman MP3 player USB connection to car stereo PC with decent PC speakers in spare room studio (mainly used for mixing) portable turntable (terrible sound - rarely used) Wireless headphones...(mainly used for listening to the match on the radio when someone has the tele on). Hate 'in-ear' headphones and only use them as a last resort.
