I completely forgot about that compilation record with the faux Warhol lips on the front. I am also fairly sure there was one in that Polydor series of cheapies with generic sleeves with the Kodak film strip on the front. I remember getting the Lifetime one and not getting it at all. I didn't hear the Velvets until 76. I knew about Nico (from seeing her on OGWT) and Cale (the Paris 1919 / Little Feat connection) long before I had any idea of what VU were about. As I say I expected them to be metallic art school glam all because of the treatments of the songs on "Rock n Roll Animal".
