I've just heard that legendary Melody Maker writer and Hawkwind biographer Carol Clerk has died. I don't have any more details at the moment.

I just heard this too. Very sad. 'The Saga Of Hawkwind' is an absolutely essetnial rock read. RIP.

Back in the mid 80s the people who ran the news pages on the weeklies were some of the least egotistical and self-serving of the rock writer cadre. Carol, along with Matt Smith Terry Staunton et al, was one of the nicest and most helpful writers that I came across during my fledgling years as a naive and fairly hopeless young press officer. Hawkwind book is pretty great too. As even handed an account as one could wish for. Sad.

Sad news. I enjoyed her mammoth Hawkwind tome. I also remember her of old, when the music press was the music press, rather than an outlet for the industry's marketing copy.
