Does it seem odd that Abba is being inducted (by The Bee Gees, no less) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday night? To me, they seem more like a pop and disco group than rock. But then again I read in Wikipedia that the inductees are chosen by individuals like Jann Wenner and rock biographer Dave Marsh rather than other musicians and the fans don't get a say in the final choices either. I personally would like to see the Hall of Fame represented by more punk acts like The Stranglers and The Buzzcocks as well as post-punkers such as Joy Division, Julian Cope (both solo and with Teardrop Explodes) and Echo and the Bunnymen. If you'd like to check out this year's inductees here's the link: http://rockhall.com/inductees/

It'd be nice to see more adventurous choices in there, but let's face it, it's down to 'units' shifted, isn't it? No band that had a LP placed at #27 in the charts nearly 30 years ago is ever going to get inducted. Does it really matter? Let them have their wank-fest, it's not really important. However, yeah, give Abba a go - they're a little bit more interesting than the regular names that get banded about.

Why not? I've no problem with it. That list long since stopped being mere "rock & roll" anyway, and since Abba represent not just a mega unit-shifting entity (as is usually the case with inductees) but a geniunely original and distinctive band with a real melodic gift, I say bring it on. Sure, I'd love to see all my favourite acts get similar recognition, but I suspect it'll be some time before we get Cluster or Hatfield and the North in the list. In the meantime, Abba'll do.

No problem there at all. I do find some of their stuff pretty dire, but when they were on form, they did some cracking tunes. Genius pop, which I will never tire of championing as it is so hard to do whilst appearing deceptively simple at times. Interesting fact: Joe Boyd had the opportunity of getting involved with them in the early 70s when they were still unknown. He was very impressed and wanted to, but was unable due to his new professional activities back in the US. Joe Boyd. The human radar of excellent taste.

Surely Don would vomit and/or collapse in derisional hysterical laughter at the very thought?

It makes perfect sense. Jann Wenner and the fogies from Rolling Stone Official Baby Boomer Nostalgia Inc. are focused on record sales and not "art." "Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame" is a business that promotes major label recording artists, in conjunction with those labels. What did you think it was? PS - I like some ABBA though!

I think alot of ABBA records just clicked, maybe just because of the harmonies and that near-folkish-gone-R&B/pop Swedish way...
