Re: KISS

There's some great theorising in this thread. If only Kiss put 1% of that thought into their music they might make something decent.

I assume that I'm one of the people here that would be expected to buy a Marc Bolan doll if there was one. Yeah...I probably would if it was a good likeness. And it was inflatable.

But I'm not sure why I would be expected to think that was different, other than the man himself isn't alive to sanction it. I haven't really got a problem with merchandise, although I can't help thinking Kiss milk it too much. But a Kiss coffin...that's so OTT it's brilliant! And I've said all along I haven't got a problem with Iggy earning some dosh via his ads.

My issue with Kiss is the music, which is subjective obviously. I didn't like them when I was 14-15 when some of my mates started getting into them and I have heard nothing since to alter the view. I might like the likes of Drake and Curtis that are referred to in Ian's post, but I don't just sit at home and listen to maudlin music by dead people all day (well not every day anyway!). I love the first NYD's LP and lots of naff dance records that would never be described as 'real' (how I hate that term!) And anyway,I've been listening to Hotpants Romance this last week for god's sake!

I've also got to take issue with Julian's quote - "if the Dolls had come up with 'Destroyer', we'd all know about it".

That's one of those quotes that sound great but ultimately mean nothing. If the Dolls had come up with Destroyer rather than their self titled debut they wouldn't be held in such high regard. They've earned that reputation in other words. IMO of course...

I'm glad Kiss make other people happy, but they do absolutely nothing for me.

I love the fact that people want to defend Kiss are being somehow hypereal and not beholden to the man, but strip away the artifice and what's left, serviceable boogie.

I realise that Kiss are way beyond just music, in fact the entire success is not based on the music but the package, which is what I suspect irritates most people, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of what's on offer there are 7 out of 10.The music of Kiss is at best passable and at its worse bloody horrible.

They may be most real & least artificial but only because they deliver the KISS Show, much the same way Oasis give the Oasis show [or did] or The Who have been doing the Who show for the last 30 years and we don't claim the lofty heights of independence for them, we call them plodrockers

to summarise, KISS ok, deserving of some but not all the praise/contempt they get

Good analysis.

I've always wanted to like Kiss. I love Slade etc, and like the idea of Kiss, but, try as I might, I just can't get into their music. Right from my teens when Kiss Alive came out I've tried, but they just never seemed to deliver (to me at least). I always wanted them to sound so much heavier than they do. I do now quite like one or two things, including Destroyer and Alive, but they always sound a bit lightweight to me. Pity, as I really want to like them more!

Fair. Very fair comment. A lot of the music is 7/10 at best. I think that is true of all rock music. It's 99% a meh artform largely made by self-promoting narcisists for whom the term "artist" is massive over-statement. The gems are rare and the bona fide geniuses even rarer. Meanwhile Kiss commit to entertain like no one else and that's no small thing.

Personally I havn't got an opinion on them beyond being mildly amused by their cartoon make up image. A chap in the office profess's to being a fan but also likes Mötley Crüe, Bon Jon Jovi and various other hairy dimwits from the 80s. Thats where I draw the line really i.e the stuff that might have taken its cue from Kiss rather than the band itself. Anyway the same colleague has never seen Spinal Tap which I am tempted to lend it to him but then again he may never enjoy Tommy Lee & co again in quite the same way

and that probably answers the original question, don't bother listening to the CDs , to experience the full majesty of KISS see them live

I'm forgetting the lumpen plod already, feel the roar of the crowd and smell the greasepaint, that picture makes me feel way better about Kiss than any of the songs do

I would imagine that Kiss are one of the few bands who if you offered a fan the chance to see them in a small club or a huge stadium, the stadium offer would be the one they went for, off hand I can't think of any other band that would benefit from being further away.

Very good!

Have you heard Henry Rollin's Kiss thing? It is in one of his spoken word cd sets. It explains everything.

Good points, although I do genuinely like the music (most of it anyway) and they work for me just as tunes. They're not my fave band of all time, (believe it or not) but they do hold a special place in my heart probably occupying similar territory to Star Wars or something like that.

I agree that the live thing is their natural environment and I expect they would agree with you too. They've stated that they wanted to be on stage the band they would like to see on stage and why not?

I know they are regarded as cash guzzling beasts but they really don't need the money anymore. And, being gentlemen of a certain age, it must be bloody hard work doing shows like that with all the kit and caboodle. Yeah they make dosh, but I think they like being onstage and being KISS and it seems people like watching 'em do it too.

I think maybe they are a bit too 'silly' for some people and yeah, some folk have a problem with silly or at least don't think in belongs in Rock. But "Owap bop a looma a wop bam boo!" is completely ridiculous when you take it at face value but it still rocks.

Also, there seems to be this either/or thing with KISS. Like, how can you like The Smiths (for example) and like KISS? I have actually had to explain myself on occasion regarding that! As if liking KISS somehow de-creds your critical faculties and impinges on your other tastes. Never quite understood that. It's like saying liking a Spider-Man movie somehow means you can't enjoy a Peter Greenaway film.

Anyhoo each to his, hers and its.

Phew - you don't get this saying you like Joy Division ;^)

Ugh! Don't get me on about Motley Crue. They're like Kiss without even the songs or the personality. Not to mention they were always scummy to the point of making Kiss look like goody-two-shoes in comparison...

See that's the thing! I've had people expect me to like Motley Crue just 'cos I like KISS but I don't. They've got about 4 or 5 half decent songs thinly strewn across their entire career IMO. They just haven't got the songs.
