This is sitting in my local HMV & I've been thinkig of grabbing it if I get some dosh. Somebody wrote a scathing review of it though. So i hope it is pretty good. said it wasn't raw enough or something. was it The Wire? Okkervil river are supposed to be decent enough on their own ain't they? No black angels but decent enough? backing Roky should be good though. wound up looking at some Roky tshirts yesterday, think I linked in from Bad Brains cos i read an x-Men Origins comic where Bobby/Iceman is wearing the Lightning strikes the white House t-shirt. So looked it up and came across a tshirt webshop, also came across Bad Brains Vans & wish I could get the Lightning strikes type. will come back and add URLs later. Stevo

I've interviewed Roky for the current issue of Stool Pigeon, out now. Alan Moore is on the cover.

Warning, contrary opinion! This album is not my cup of tea -- I like Roky when he's "crazy", not being a mellow gospelish guy. And Okervil is just some boring alt-country band as far as I can tell. Too slick. College rock. |

I thought about getting this a few weeks ago, but when I heard a couple of the track samples on amazon, I have to say I came to a similar conclusion. It sounded a bit uninspiring to my ears. I have read very good reviews though so perhaps that's unfair.

Well, 1st I saw them live w/ Roky here in L.A. before I heard the record, and while O River probably isn't anyone I'm likely to follow up with, their lead guitarist is notably wonderful. (More notably in person, though she's fine on the record) 2nd, tho it is in some ways a needless biographical recap, the record is odd enough to work for me. I don't think anyone's been born that knows what to do with Roky in the studio, what kind of record (if any in particular) he'd really like to make or how to go about making it. So given all of that, I didn't mind this one. And "John Lawman" stomps the terra. Have only listened all the way through once, will listen again when I have a few minutes and some distance. It was nice to have Roky's energy in the room on recordings I'm not super-familiar with. And it wasn't any kind of hacked-together bullshit job. So I can't complain.

Yeah, John Lawman is fucking astounding I think it is a gorgeous LP... but I'm not much of a 13th Floor Elevators fan

I've finally got a copy and it's okay to my ears but i'm not exactly bowled over by it. I probably prefer the earlier versions of the old songs - 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' has long been a favourite of mine and I was really excited about getting a full band version of it but... well, I was underwhelmed. Still, I'm glad it's out and that Roky is finally prospering a little.
