I saw them play 2 nights in London last year, the first supporting Jesus Lizard and Harvey Milk; then their own gig at Corsica studios. They were brilliant both nights - Corsica studios was more intimate of course but the sound quality of the Forum gig was stunning. I chatted to Emil Amos after the Corsica gig and he said that it was Sonic Youth's sound guy touring with Jesus Lizard who'd given them a new set up that Emil was obviously impressed with. He was asking my thoughts - shame I've no idea when it comes to technical matters, but I could tell him it sounded good! The line-up was great as well with two drummers, enabling Emil to add a 3rd guitar to some tracks, and Randall Dunn (produced recent SunnO))), Grails and Six Organs records etc) on electronics. As for post-BTP records, I think they're great though I am biased as Grails are one of my favourite bands. Easy listening?! The atmosphere of the later records are probably less dense than BTP, though that said the Randall Dunn produced Doomsdayer's Holiday starts pretty ominously with screams and Sabbath riffing. They're recording the next volume of BTP this Spring though so perhaps some of that will be played live.

To add, though I don't necessarily recommend getting it ahead of the albums proper, the Acid Rain dvd is good, especially the live show recorded in NY a few years back (with the normal 4 piece line-up) when they were supporting OM. It mainly has tracks from Burning Off Impurities and is superb, especially the title track - which just explodes when Emil Amos' drumming really kicks-off.

Hey if/when I get the BTP vinyl I can if (you'd like) do a PC digital recording and cd burn for you. Tis frustrating these vinyl only releases I agree- especially as pressing quality sorely sucks sometimes. Lets hope for a good-un. The original BTP sounds excellent on CD afterall. Thanks for the DVD tips!

didn't read your post to the end, thought you had dismissed them after BTP and wondered why you would want too see a band you'd obviously fallen out of love with Can't say anything about them live, other than whay I've read which has all been good, as for mellowing out the new stuff isn't going to give James Blunt a run for his money, I think they are a great progression, plenty of bands out there deliver low end woomph if you want it, the newer stuff has asubtlety, a bit of light & shade, or at least grey and really black, especially Doomsdayers Holiday. Depends on your point of view, plenty of folk seem pissed off because the latest SunnO))) isn't Grimmrobes, and because you have a trombone you are now cosying up to Beyonce & Jay Z.

Yes, I think folk should also push their musical boundaries and comfort zones in the other 'lighter' direction. I've been listening to Michael Rother's first 3 albums a lot recently (produced by Conny Plank with Jaki Leibezeit playing Dinger-esque drums). I've read comments dissing them essentially because they're not NEU! records, and on first listen I was sceptical e.g. thought the guitars were far too clean... but in the end I've succumbed to their gorgeousness and that old motorik beat and can't stop playing them.
