Squid Tempest wrote: The Fall - Early Fall 77-79 An old vinyl comp on Step Forward. Fantastic collection which sounds brill on my nice turntable. I bought a copy of this LP from a second hand place in Hereford many years ago when I was at school. I had got "In Palace Of Swords" by then so expected more of the same. I was very surprised to hear an LP of country and western. I still don't know who is on this LP, but it sure isn't MES! As a further aside, I bought a copy of Live '77 (now deleted I think) a few years aso and it actually does play Early Fall 77-79 instead and I have since heard two further copies the same. Still never heard Live '77!

I see it was Wire's album of the year for 2009.

Popel Vooje wrote: The Fall - The Unutterable For sure, they've released so many albums now that only a monomaniacal obsessive would want to own them all (not to mention all the dodgy grey-market issues of out-takes and live shows which, if piled up on top of each other, would probably reach even higher than Willie Nelson's mountain of outstanding IRS bills), but this is a diamond in the dust which stands out from all of their post "Infotainment Scan" releases, and which they haven't topped since. A great album - I really like The Real New Fall Album (Formerly Country on The Click) meself.

One of the guitarists in YYN, Adrian, studied at Liverpool poly at that time too, so they were fairly NW based. I bumped into his ex girlfriend a few weeks back in Wirral. He was a big TG fan too. Always thought they had a good sound. Funny when they supported Test Dept at the Liverpool Uni about 1984/85 and they did a bit of metal bashing during their set! 8)

I think it's good but certainly wouldn't go as far as album of the year with it. It's a bit too stylised and not organic enough IMO... a lot of references from the Gamelli etc type of library music. It's well put together though and is clever. Would put the Jim o'rourke or Durutti albums above it in any 2009 poll myself. 8)

Was mentioned as being limited in Wire - there is an album to follow later in 2010 as well.
