Magnog - Magnog Jessamine - Jessamine Flying Saucer Attack - Further Windy and Carl - Drawing of Sound None of which really answer your question as they are all from the 90's (good though) TpS

Aural Innovations is a great place to start as they play old and new and you can stream or download their old spacerock playlists http://aural-innovations.com/radio/radio.html

Pink Floyd Ummagumma live disc. Think they at least partially invented the sound on their early lps didn't they? Audiosapien Earthmonkey little heard set produced by Steven stapleton. Plus I'd reccommend checking out Sun Ra's electric stuff & Larry Young's Lawrence of Newark oh & Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi material. all of which is jazz but really does seem to be exploring the same general directions. & don't Gong fit rather majorly at least in Flying Teapot era? The 2007 EMI 3CD Greasy Truckers Party reissue has Man and Hawkwind at their live spacerocking best, and the Glastonbury fayre triple has Hawkwind again and the Pink Fairies, Edgar Broughton Band, Gong and Mighty Baby and Grateful Dead (Dark Star - Space Rock?) all boldly going where no man has gone before. Help Yourself had their moments too - Reaffirmation on Beware the Shadow and The All Electric Fur Trapper on Strange Affair.

I suppose that Tangerine Dream's Zeit and Phaedra would be too obvious... Also, anything by Chrome or Helios Creed, Tummler, Titan, and Pollen, which is a French band from the 70's (check out Mutant Sounds blog) are all good bets for out-rock.
