Also, I can't stand The Flaming Lips. Granted, some of their early work is quite enjoyably chaotic, but mainly I hate Wayne Coyne's faux-naive, faux-profound, 'I speak the truth like a child' wide-eyed creepy guru-messiah schtick, which amounts to spouting dreadful American hippy platitudes in a whiny high voice with KY Jelly melting in his beard. Their hit singles over the last decade have musically been more akin to Coldplay, yet they receive tons of critical plaudits.

I REALLY don't get it.

Jeff was a lot better live than on record, as the syrupy production on "Grace" unfortunately removed a lot of the edge from his performances. Fair enough though, his dad was miles better as an artist, if not - by all accounts - as a human being.

Even as recently as five years ago I would have disagreed with your assessment of the Flaming Lips - "Hit To Death in the Future Head" is one of my favourite albums of all time - but I'll admit that their recent output has tested the patience of even a long-term fan like me. Too much widdly prog nonsense.

Mind you, even "At War With the Mystics" wasn't as bad as the last two Mercury Rev hjave put out. They need David Baker back in the band, pronto. On a good night, the early line-up were a blistering enough live act to raze entire civilisations. Now they're just boring Dadrock bollox.

Bob Dylan
Sex Pistols
Arctic Monkeys, and really any "indie" band. I really cannot see it.
Radiohead
Rolling Stones
The Who
The Beatles
Pink Floyd (the Waters/Gilmour years)
Echo & The Bunnymen (all bias aside I find them about as thrilling as Radiohead)
Muse
Jeff Buckley
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
REM - My best mate has EVERYTHING, but I can count my favourite tracks on one hand, End Of The World means sweet FA to me)

Fairy nuff dude. Wasn'te especially meaning you, I mean I know your secret shames for a start (and soon, so will the world hahahaha) ;^)

But some of the long-overcoat brigade* I've met have been known to go off the scale on the overly earnest-ometer with out realising they actually have a relatively easy time of it in the critcial kudos arena.

The point I was making with Spinal Tap et al wasn't that you have to be into the music to find it funny; rather that the fact that loads of metal fans love it so is an indication of how they find it easy to laugh at and with whilst still loving their thang.

Anyway, Julian Cope?! What's that all about?!!

*I've got one actually. But it's leather obviously. And has a little flying V on the lapel. Sad but true!

I thought you made some fair points in a reasonable way really. But I still prefer Jack n Meg to Skag n Fleg. x

Flaming Lips, the latter day version is just high-pitched, whiny and then it evaporates.

Any love for House Of Freaks may be the first guitar drum rock duo. Great early 80's LA band, one of whose members was killed in a home invasion.

also Spanic Boys, father son duo.

True story- I was in the new Rough Trade off Brick Lane a month or so ago browsing, and two hipster type guys aged 21, 22 or so came in, one picked up a Tim Buckley CD and held it up to his mate with an ironic snicker. 'Look, it's Jeff's dad,' he said. 'Really?' the other smirked back.

I take all your points, though. Fair enough. Agree about Mercury Rev, too; I don't think I've even heard their last couple, but although they were great in their day they've been on a steady decline for a while. Like many others.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Vincent Gallo. Women who don't have a life go nuts about him. People rave about his convoluted music. He just strikes me as a sneering muso really -- a hippie who hates hippies... Does anybody here like him really? I sure don't. I've heard him so I'm sure I don't like him. "So Sad" is just drippy, soppy sentiment with a slick sub-jazz backing that pretends to be the rich-man's Jandek but not the least bit convincing at all...
