For me it's partly that but mostly the fact that after those two great, great first albums ('Heartbreaker' especially) and some Whiskeytown stuff, he just lost the plot. Everything since ranged from bland to blimmin insipid!
We saw him live back in 2001, and he did the living God bit quite convincingly! Played for 3 and a half hours, made us laugh, made us cry, created a vibe I've never seen before or since. The whole place buzzed. It was beautiful. Shame he couldn't have kept that up.
