not up on Rowe... Derek Bailey has a disc called "guitar and drum and bass" that's very interesting, on the cold and harsh side and I never play it but the ideas are engaging Sonny Sharrock's BLACK WOMAN is ENORMOUS and includes some of the best woman-coming vocals EVER, very skronky freejazz with MILFORD GRAVES on drums on one side, super brilliant. Sonny's other stuff, some I like better than others. His work for the TV show Space Ghost Coast To Coast is, strangely, phenomenal, and there's a live set with Ginger Baker that's very cool laid-back intense. And James Blood Ulmer blows my mind for his work with drones and odd tunings as well as straight skronk. Haven't checked out his recent run of blues records but the stuff with Bill Laswell is surprisingly good (South Saturn Space Age, Blue Blood) as are Odyssey and Odyssey Reunion and Tales Of Captain Black (which is sort of also an Ornette Coleman record, I think) But on the whole, I really really dig Marc Ribot (Rootless Cosmopolitans or Saints are good places to start)

Derek Bailey is the only one you need: Dart Drug with Jamie Muir and all solo recordings are excellent. the "guitar and drum and bass" thing is utter crap, the worst thing he ever did. I used to listen to Blood Ulmer alot @ 20 years ago. Never liked Sonny Sharock or Keith Rowe much, though. The one avant guitarist I listen to & admire most, however, is Hans Reichel. Do not miss "The Death of the Rare Bird Ymir/Bonobo Beach" disc.
