We used to get the local gypsies (proper romany gypsies that is, not middle-class white dreadlock 'travellers'!!!) coming down all the streets yelling- "clothes-pegs for rags?!" which was a great sound to hear on a weekend......

.....as for white dog shit, a friend of mine contacted Fortean Times about 10 years ago, spouting forth the absence of said dog poop.

I remember even seeing soft white poo as well as the more common crumbly variety - we thought itr was down to dogs eating more bones than usual and having more direct calcium intake -
I can't remember the outcome of the debate though

I remember Elvis' death (I was 4) and my teen sisters were sobbing their hearts out!
They never played any of his stuff, think they just went with the flow.
I didn't know who he was, but I distinctly remember that slightly fuzzy American telly film colour and how it differed from ours!

We used to fish for crabs off the breakwaters with a bit of bread tied to string.

Bloody hell. We've all gone a bit 'All Our Yesterdays' here, haven't we? ; )

I'll stick to the music...

The Beatles were everywhere. Loved the early singles. Also loved daft things like Ha Said The Clown, Peekaboo, If I Were A Rich Man.

By the time I was 7yrs old, I was really into music and I couldn't wait to see TOTP, to catch a glimpse of The Move or Manfred Mann. I can still remember seeing Fire Brigade and Mighty Quinn performed there - I was gutted when Esther & Abi Ofarim knocked the Manfred's off the no.1 slot with the dire Cinderalla Rockafella. I blamed my sister for buying it!!

I loved Lady Madonna and Hey Jude big style, too.

Just been looking at the list of no's for 1968 - some truly great pop records.

Hello Goodbye
Ballad of Bonnie & Clyde
Everlasting Love
Mighty Quinn
Cinderalla Rockafella
Legend of Xanadu
Lady Madonna
Congratulations
What A Wonderful World
Young Girl
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Baby Come Back
I Pretend (Des!!)
Mony Mony
Fire (Arthur Brown)
Do It Again
I've Gotta Get A Message To You
Hey Jude
Those Were The Days
With A Little Help From My Friends
The Good The Bad & The Ugly

and to end on a typically silly note,

Lily The Pink!

OK, there's the odd turkey there, but overall...well, no wonder I loved pop music so much.

Right, once and for all. Yes, less bones but more importantly less bonemeal used to bulk out petfood products. Often chalk was used in cheaper products 'added calcium', what bastard wouldn't want that for their pooch? (Hence all that stuff about marrow in the Pedigree Chum ads.)

So, what about dogs that eat loads of bones? As Mrs Ahab mentioned, it can still occasionally be seen. But, all-in these days there's considerably less dog shit on the streets. not only that, but that which is doesn't get to lie about for so long and dry out (as it's the dried out solids that are white).
