I've always had the attitude that if I like the music/person/whatever, I like it/them and I'm never ashamed to say so - unless I can't be arsed....

How very British to be talking about the 'class' of music.

Frankly, I don't care what 'class' musicians are, I'm only interested in the music.

However if people bang on and on about their particular class credentials it can get terribly wearing. For example Oasis and their oft-quoted working class Manc roots. So frigging what?! What do they want, a sodding medal? Actually Oasis was a bad example because I've just made myself ANGRY now > GRRRRRRRRR!

Not splitting hairs here Shansh - but Mr. Osterberg was from quite 'well-to-do'' jewish stock - not that it makes him any different of course - all the more reason for him to rebel methinks !!!

According to Wiki he was raised in a trailer park, and I'm sure I heard him tell Melv Bragg that too!

EDIT: Maybe his trailer was one of them posh ones though, bloody kid on..
;-))

EDIT AGAIN!: If you read on it says he 'grew up in one as a teen at the start of his music career', which makes no sense as a statement whatsoever!

So thanks for letting me know!

This is an interesting one.

I think the music people make reflects the access the makers have had to a wide education or at least the access to tools that ensure that they can continue their self-education.

Most great English rock and rollers come from lower middle class and skilled blue collar backgrounds - people who have access to some of the things that help get out there and make a noise but also every incentive to get the fuck out of town.

Of course that favours people with some money and people in cities. In the 60s it certainly favoured people who made it into Art School.

So it is partly a class issue but really it's about whether ones imagination is encouraged or stunted at key moments. You can usually tell which acts spent their school years pissing about in the back row and never went near a book thereafter.

We had virtually no books in our house apart from a Brittanica and the Dennis Wheatley and Agatha Christie type paperbacks but I had access to anything that took my fancy at the local library. So if Lou Reed name dropped Crime & Punishment or Bill Nelson mentioned Jean Cocteau in the NME or Melody Maker on a Thursday I could be reading their stuff by dinner time Friday for free thanks to the Labour government!

YES, oh God yes!
Was it the Jools Holland thing when he wrote 'Fair Trade' on his hand and kept brandishing it to the cameras? Get. A. Tattoo. I have lots of tattoos, and over half of them say 'Coldplay suck'. Well, my next one might.

Reckon Moth's right. If ya like the music/band/person, that should be good enough. If they're a twat with/without money then they're still a twat. It just rankles a bit when Madonna's rattling the tin, and she's trousering a gazillion quid a day, without batting an eyelid. And that's got nowt to do with class or background. More a lack of class.

The one and only (maybe) time I felt utterly rattled by 'class' in this context was Phil Collins' 'Another day in Paradise'.
HIM imploring US to 'think twice' about homeless people, as if we hadn't heard of them before he, the rich middleclass wankpot that he is made that abomination of a song on the matter.

Did the proceeds go to a homeless charity?
If they did, forgiveable.
If not - a hanging offence!
