Your assistance please, fellow HHers
Jul 09, 2007, 21:14
Want to fill up my Julian Cope shelf a bit more, but need some direction. Please help me with the following:

1. Is 'Rome Wasn't Burned In A Day' worthy of purchasing?

2. Which 'Rite' is best?

I thank yow.

Glad to help.
Rome Wasn't Burned is worthy, if only for Michele of my Former Self, TC Lethbridge, and the Way Luv Is. Which is a pretty large chunk of the record, so, yes, I reckon it is.
Rite Squared and Rite On are both up there. Rite is worthy for its "original intent" appeal. As for Rite Bastard, don't bother.

Funny how Cope fans' tastes differ so much...

I'd say buy Rome Wasn't Burned In a Day for "Eccentrifugal Force"; the other songs don't do much for me.

As for the Rites, I think Rite Bastard is super-cool; I enjoy it more than Rite and Rite Squared.

1. Yes
2. Buy all three, but only if you have time to give each one the time it deserves

I like Rome (go for the 2 cds edition, if you can).

The first RITE is by far the best, IMO. But it's not easy to buy.

Rome is worth getting - can't believe the others haven't mentioned Shrine of the Black Youth, a classic Cope epic!

In terms of the Rite series, the funky tracks don't do much for me so my personal favourite is Rite 2, a bit more ambient and spacey I suppose.

Too bad you can't simply find mp3s for them. Listen to the mp3s and decide which albums to buy. Try before you buy, you know?

When I am "on the fence", here's what I try to do:

1) google for the mp3s [this is the hard part]
2) download the mp3s
3) listen to the mp3s
4a) if you like the mp3s, buy the CD
4b) if you do not like the mp3s, delete them

I did this yesterday with Von Sudenfed (a Mark E Smith / Mouse on Mars collaboration). I liked some of the mp3s, so I bought the CD. Without the mp3s, I wouldn't have bothered. Now, if only I could find mp3s for "Post Nearly Man"...
