with a soft spot from way back for AC/DC and madness, followed a bit later by Ben Folds Five.
I've also a weakness for lambchop, robyn hitchcock, bellowhead anything with eliza carthy in, mid period van the man and others i've forgotten about

Bands... not solo artists who play with a band, right?
I don't have a *favourite*, but my among my top ten are Steely Dan, 10cc, Focus, Santana, The Allman Brothers' Band, Led Zep and Deep Purple.

Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, Julian Cope, Underworld, Orbital, Gong, King Crimson, Yes, KISS, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Comus, Shpongle, Eat Static, Isley Bros (70's), Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock....loads n loads.

For making consistantly great records over a long period of time, it's gonna have to be Spacemen 3 / Spiritualized, although.....
my inner groovy cat would be inclined to say Neu!, in fact just about anything involving either Michael Rother or Klaus Dinger from the 70's will do just fine for me.
