There's a good reason they put familiar faces on the cover: it makes more people buy it! This is a deliberate strategy to lure people in who wouldn't give a second glance to a cover with say, Sun Ra. Once they've parted with their money they are quite likely to read an article about someone new to them and maybe investigate further.
As I said this is their openly declared policy, which is smart thinking. Give the uncomitted something familiar and hope to turn them on to the good stuff.... People buying for an Oasis cover are probably beyond hope, but have at least helped subsidise the maagzine.
