I'd go for the SPV reissue of Solar Music Live. They are a little like Gentle Giant in that they are another band that didn't always get the excitement of their live show to transfer to the studio. A live record can give you a better sense of what they were trying to do musically - even if you are doing it "blind" without the theatricality. Ballerman is pretty great though.

I adore the self-titled debut and of course the
live beast/monster/classic Solar Music Live and also quite dig Rockpommel's Land. Jumbo was a bit of a letdown to me but Ballermann is the final essential
piece of the Grobschnitt puzzle. Eroc's first solo album entitled Eroc is also quite good for the most part as are Eroc Zwei, and Eroc 4. 3 doesn't do much for me.

The only album I know so far is "Rockpommel's Land," and while it's a bit fruity/twee (that's never stopped me from liking anything!), the final track, "Tontillon" is quite lovely. I put the record on for the first time one evening while we were making dinner, doing 'round the house type stuff and I was pretty charmed, but it was "Tontillon" that made me pause to really listen.

Haven't read all the other replies, so not sure what's already been said... It is often said that Grobschnitt's best moment is the LP Rockpommel's Land, though for me this is my least favourite of the ones I've heard.
The best starter for lovers of cosmic prog is the 2-LP Ballermann, closely followed by Solar Music Live (the track Solar Music being the lengthy highlight of Ballermann). The self-titled debut is good prog but maybe not as likely to be liked as Ballermann; Jumbo is more commercial but I find it a nice fun album to listen to. Rockpommel's Land is like a weak sub-Yes, anonymous-sounding prog concept album with few moments that are worthwhile at all, though I'm sure some people would disagree.

I highly recommend the first self titled album, it's a lot rawer than the later stuff, more Kraut inspired than symphonic. Of the later stuff the solarmusic live lp is bloomin ace, and i have a soft spot for Jumbo meself. Rockpommelsland is Ok but not the fantastic album some people think it is, possibly due to the tinny production on it. There is some great playing on it mind you and a few of the instrumental sections are very cool indeed. I did get hold of a Live DVD of solarmusic from one of the sharing sites a few years back, and i think a live cd set too, will have a look and dig them out if i still have them if any one is interested?

Grobschnitt - German for 'Rough Cut', as in Tobacco. Opening cuts on the first album have a bongoid southern cal vibe, and remind me of Santana at times. Funny story about the guitar player throwing a hissy fit at the orchestra during his rather beautiful solo on the album highlight Sun Trip, which is very elegiac and swan song-like in a bobby beausoleil Lucifer Rising kind of way. Marring the experience is their German hippy gonzo humor which was a big factor with these guys - think Guru Guru circa Kanguru; a self-indulgent pain in the ass as it really kills the flow of the music (which, being arch-prog, is self-indulgent to begin with). Solar Music Live is blessedly light on the goofy kraut antics and heavier on the Kozmische Musik, and as a result the best for these ears.

Up the 'Schnitters!( although the 'wackiness' can be a bit laboured in a teutonic kinda of manner)

Thanks to IanB and his shady connections, I have Ballerman which is ace and Solar Music live which I like even more. Of their time and all the more enjoyable for it I'd say. Good stuff and I hope you enjoy it!
