HH Overrated albums Top 10
Oct 05, 2005, 18:51
Seems that the piece on bbc.co.uk has aroused a fair bit of debate, so here's your chance to have your say!

For the record, my tuppence worth is :

1. The Cure : Pornography
2. The Smiths : The Queen Is Dead
3. The Beatles : Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band
4. Radiohead : OK Computer
5. Pink Floyd : The Dark Side Of The Moon
6. David Bowie : The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
7. The Stone Roses : The Stone Roses
(I actually like that album, but it's nowhere near as good as a lot of the all-time-Top-100 polls make out)
8. The Who : Tommy
(Not a bad album , but defifnitely not his best)
9. The Sex Pistols : Never Mind The Bollocks
10.The Clash : The Clash

What's yours? (And if anyone puts "Forever Changes" or "Smile" in there, I'll be around your house to confiscate your CD player!)

Hmmm ... there're some good albums in your list, but I understand what you mean about the over-rated reverence that some of them seem to enjoy.

I can't recall the names of most of their albums, but do remember being a little non-plussed about the fuss that they attracted at the time...
Air (the one where half the tracks remind me of the theme tune to 'Taxi')
Finley Quaye
Portishead
Cypress Hill
Dire Straights - Brothers In Arms
Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill

Well, I'll give this a bash...

No order, but definitely all qualify more or less equally...

Beatles: "Sgt. Pepper" ("Revolver" is the better high point for their work, not this...this still feels incomplete/flawed to this day)

Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours" (lamelameLAME overplayed 70s cokehead drivel...hated it then, hate it now...of all of these, this is perhaps the most overrated)

Guns and Roses: "Appetite for Destruction" (nothing in here that loads of other people didn't do better previously...G'n'R just had better publicists)

Nirvana: "Nevermind" (again, not their best work, just best-hyped...another instance of 'breakthru' being confused with 'legendary' status)

Led Zeppelin: "IV" (same here..."IV" gets all the props due to "Stairway", but other albums have stronger work despite the fact that "IV" is perhaps the most consistent of the bunch)

Beach Boys: "Pet Sounds" (it's nice enough, but clearly a flawed work, mainly due to the usual meddling Brian Wilson's work received)

Pink Floyd: "Dark Side of the Moon" (again, another played-out relic, well-sold but not as good as others of theirs...further minuses for self-indulgence)

Yes: "Fragile" (more overplayed self-indlugence...and yet again, other work of theirs ultimately overshadows this, as do other works in the prog genre)

Bob Dylan: "Nashville Skyline" (got loads of props for being an initial 'crossover' breakthru, but now just sounds like some sort of novelty riff, honestly)

The Clash: "London Calling" (was one of the first breakthrus for punk in the USA, but The Clash did better and certainly more interesting work both studio and live)

Love - forever changes. Nothing represented the climate of the time better? Well it sounds horribly dated. And horribly not that good
usual suspects - ok computer, sgt pepper.
Captain Beefheart - Troutmask replica. Far out? avant garde? out there? Unlistenable more like, and i've got a lot of time for the good captain and stuff people can't be bothered to listen to because it is too challenging - just that this wasn't his best work.
Brian Eno - Music for airports 1. Do something for fucks sake! Actually i'm not sure if that album was ever really rated, but it kind of marked the start of his ambient career, and he has done much better than this.
Fleetwood Mac - anything really. I've got the 1st few albums for some reason - they all repeat each other anyway and are desperately dull white man blues. And that was supposed to be their best period! Then play on is alright i suppose
Can - Tago Mago. I know i'm treading on really dangerous sacred ground here, but it is not my favourite Can. One of the longer tracks towards the end of the album is definitely unlistenable noise.

Pink Floyd - The Wall. wrong, all wrong. shitty concept matched by dreadful music in the main.

Can't really be arsed coming upo with 10 (and I think I've ranted on about Pet Sounds enough.) But, the one that really gets me worryingabout the future of mankind and wandering off shaking my head is Screamadelica. It's a collection of variable remixes and stones pastiches. FULL STOP.

Most of these are records I like (to some degree at least), but think are over-rated by the renumerated arbiters of rock hierarchy.

Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon
(Too much plastic sheen, and ‘Money’ is fucking horrible)

Television – Marquee Moon
(Too many longeurs)

The Sex Pistols – Never Mind The Bollocks…
(Stood for something at the time, but musically it’s pretty much rockabilly with the amps turned up)

Station To Station – Bowie
(Love the title track, but otherwise too many MOR tracks, and it doesn’t hang together very well as a whole.)

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead
(I prefer ‘Strangeways Here We Come’. Much funnier and weirder)

Treasure – Cocteau Twins
(It all went too rococo coffee table at this point)

Pink Floyd – The Wall
(It amazes me that people still mistake the miserablism on this for profundity, when it’s actually cringeworthy self-indulgence)

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
(Don’t like the production on it, which is too self-consciously 'alienated' and think Closer was stratospherically better)

Kind Of Blue – Miles Davis
(Much prefer ‘In A Silent Way’ and ‘Bitches Brew’)

Ash Ra Tempel – Seven Up
(A waste of space, in all senses)
