I remember Brain of Morbius. A few years ago I was working at a rehearsal studio in New Cross and my bandmate John used to be quite into them and was cionstantly inviting me out to scuzzy venues in the Deptford/Lewsham area I'd never heard of to see them, but they were pretty good. On one occasion I saw them supporting Blurt, if I remember correctly.

I do believe Dawn After Dark's singer, known as "H" (not the one from Steps), was actually one Howard Johnson who wrote for Kerrang at the time, and I believe he scribes for stuff like Classic Rock these days.

Well, for a time it was stuff like;

Happy Mondays
Stone Roses
Inspiral Carpets
James
New Order
(some of the the big guns so to speak)
plus Oasis.

808 State (and Graham Massey's other projects)
A Guy Called Gerald
M People (gag)
Ruthless Rap Assasins (who would later meld with Black Grape)

plus the also rans i.e

Paris Angels
Northside
Northern Uproar
The High
Metal Monkey Machine
World of Twist (who I liked at least)
Intastella

Up n' Coming in an NME kind of way are...

Twisted Wheel (Manc Arctic Monkalikes)
The Ting Tings (who have one good song)
The Whip (I quite like what I've heard)
The Corteeners (very Oasis in a "We're the best fookin' band evah!")
Cherry Ghost

Singer songwriters who are actually good in a non-James Blunt way

Liz Green
Denis Jones
There's also Karima Francis but I find her a bit shouty in a solo 4-Non Blondes kinda way.

And rock bands that get overlooked cos they're not indie as such

Amplifier
Atavist
Oceansize

Plus leave us not to forget the HH affiliated Triclops and Illuminati!

I've been trying to write a poem about James Blunt, but can't seem to get passed the first line.

World of Twist were a great band! I loved 'em! Still haven't tracked down their elusive unreleased second album (was available by download for a while!) if anyone else is aware of them and has it get in touch, also looking for their radio sessions, cos they did a stonking version of kick out the jams!

Saw them live in nottingham at the uni and it was a fab gig, in my top ten gigs.

The Storm and Sons Of The Stage are two of the best singles ever in my opinion.

Tony Ogden (the singer) committed suicide last year though, very sad.

A really good site here on them:

Stunningly original website name there....
