Nat, if you haven't heard it, check out the originial bythe late Chris Bell (ex of Big Star) on the album "I am the cosmos". It's breathtaking.

Check out Tom Paxton

Talking Vietnam Potluck Blues
Words and Music by Tom Paxton
When I landed in Vietnam,
I hardly got to see Saigon.
They shaped us up and called the roll,
And off we went on a long patrol.
Swattin' flies, swappin' lies,
Firing the odd shot here and there.

The captain called a halt that night
And we had chow by the pale moonlight.
A lovely dinner they planned for us
With a taste like a seat on a crosstown bus.
Some of the veterans left theirs in the cans
For the Viet Cong to find. . .
Deadlier than a land mine.

Well naturally somebody told a joke
And a couple of fellas began to smoke.
I took a whiff as a cloud rolled by
And my nose went up like an infield fly.
The captain, this blonde fella from Yale, said
"What's the matter with you, baby?"

Well, I may be crazy, but I think not.
I'd swear to God that I smell pot.
But who'd have pot in Vietnam?
He said, "What do you think you're sittin' on?"
These funny little plants, thousands of them.
Good God Almighty... Pastures of Plenty!

We all lit up and by and by
The whole platoon was flying high.
With a beautiful smile on the captain's face
He smelled like midnight on St. Mark's Place.
Cleaning his weapon, chanting the Hare Krishna.

The moment came as it comes to al,
When I had to answer nature's call.
I was stumbling around in a beautiful haze
When I met a little cat in black P.J.'s,
Rifle, ammo-belt, B.F. Goodrich sandals.
He looked up at me and said,
"Whatsa' matta wit-choo, baby?"

He said, "We're campin' down the pass
And smelled you people blowin' grass,
And since by the smell you're smokin' trash
I brought you a taste of a special stash
Straight from Uncle Ho's victory garden.
We call it Hanoi gold."

So his squad and my squad settled down
And passed some lovely stuff around.
All too soon it was time to go.
The captain got on the radio. . .
"Hello, headquarters. We have met the enemy
And they have been smashed!"

Really though it’s...

I had nothing to say on Christmas day when you threw all your clothes in the snow. When you burnt your hair, knocked over chairs, I just tried to stay out of your way. But when you fell asleep with blood on your teeth, I got in my car and drove away. Listen to me, Butterfly, there's only so much wine you can drink in one life and it will never be enough to save you from the bottom of your glass. Where the state highway starts I stopped my car. I got out and stared up at the stars. As meteors died and shot cross the sky, I thought about your sad, shining eyes. I came back for my clothes when the sun finally rose but you were still passed out on the floor.

or...

Sittin' at a tiny table in a ritzy restaurant. She was starin' at her coffee cup, He was tryin' to keep his courage up by applying booze. The talk was small when they talked at all, They both knew what they wanted. There was no need to talk about it. They were old enough to scoff it out and keep it loose.
She said, you don't look like my type but I guess you'll do. Third rate romance, Low rent rendezvous. He said, I'll even tell you that I love you if you want me to. Third rate romance, Low rent rendezvous.

And they left the bar, they got in his car and they drove away. He drove to the Family Inn. She didn't even have to pretend she didn't know what for. Then he went to the desk and made his request while she waited outside. And he came back with the key and she said, give it to me and I'll unlock the door. She kept sayin' I've never really done this kind of thing before, have you? Third rate romance, Low rent rendezvous. And he said, Yes I have but only a time or two. Third rate romance, Low rent rendezvous.

...depending on my mood!

We've got photographs of men on the moon,
We've got water that is good for us,
We've got coffee that's instantaneous,
We've got buildings that are very tall,
We've got cigarettes that are low in tar,
We've got policemen can tell us who we are,
We can reproduce a work of art,
We've got missiles can tear the world apart,
Good, good, good, good, good, good technology.

We've got trains that run underground,
Aeroplanes that fly very fast,
We've got music that is popular,
We've got machines that sound like orchestras,
We've got ability to transplant a heart,
We've got freezers full of body parts,
We've got computers that can find us friends,
We know roughly when the world will end,
Good, good, good, good, good, good technology.

We've got animals with transistors in,
We've got pills that can make you slim,
We've got factories turning frozen chickens out,
We've got ovens that cook in seconds flat,
We've got plastics that are indestructible,
We've got deodorants that make us smell of flowers,
We've got detergents to clean up the sea,
We've got sounds can turn you inside out!

Sometimes I wonder what it is all about?
There's lots of leisure time to sit and work it out.
There's a tv show I've got to see,
Good, good, good, good, good, good technology,
Good technology.
