You're right somehow but do take into account that May and Taylor are the original Queen. They've been playing together since 1968 and was only when basist-vocalist Tim Staffel quit that they started a search that ended up in Mercury and Deacon.

At that time they were already playing future Queen songs under the name of Smile while Mercury was releasing a Phil Spector-wall-of-sound single under the name of Larry Lurex Xp called "I Can Hear Music"
in which he almost sounds like a girl. It took me a while to realize it was actually him.
