New Zealand
Oct 01, 2004, 23:39
I downloaded a couple of songs by the Clean the other day - great stuff. I've always known about this Dunedin/New Zealand thing vaguely but never got round to getting anything. Too many other things to get first!

Any tips where to start?

Snapper's Buddy 12" if you ever see it. An absolute classic.

Baiterspace, the clean, the bats all had some great songs. Have a listen to Chris Knox "Joy of Sex" on the above site, He had some brilliant stuff, but could also be very average .Headless Chickens were a marvellous band who had a hit with "Cruise Control", that being their most commercial sound. "Head like a hole" were a somewhat louder prospect, but suitably unusual .
But for me, even though not the Dunedin sound, the best of the lot on Flying Nun has gotta be the Subliminals. If Julian or Seth man wrote a review of this, you'd be fighting for a copy. I think it's a bit hard to get, though. Not too many vocals and lotsa brilliant music, the one vaguely commercial song "Oh Ohh" had me humming it for weeks.

Bout time the chills got a mention on here. Submarine bells is my favourite of their albums. Wossname popsong was once played in the background during an episode of neighbours that i'd been forced to watch.

if you can find it,get the Flying Nun compilation "In Love With These Times" which features the ace janglepop of "Cactus Cat" by Look Blue Go Purple, the dark, fucking dark minor chord gem of "Slow Sad Love Song" by The Verlaines.....don't see it very often, but it'd only set you back about two hundred pence.......coz nobody cares anymore.....went to see The Chills once in Plymouth,me and about 35 others crammed into an, erm, 800 capacity ballroom...everyone through the door got a gratis raffle ticket, and i was the lucky recipient of two tickets to Womack And Womack.........cheers

oh god, almost forgot, you need the first Straitjacket Fits album,"Hail" which has classics like "Sparkle That Shines","She Speeds" and an ace cover of Leonard Cohen's "So Long Marianne".Go find......worth evry cent
