Stella Artois is not Vegetarian
Dec 31, 2002, 18:32
I think you'll find that virtually no lager or bitter is Vegetarian as Isinglass is used in the production of just about all the major products. So a bit unfair to single out Stella.............

I believe Cider, however, is Vegan, even the mass produced fizzy stuff.

So drink Scrumpy - you know it makes sense!

Traditional cider makers would lob a sheeps head in to help the fermentation process so I'm told!

While we're on the subject of unexpectedly non-veggie stuff. Here's a list of what I've found...

Gelatine and rennet seem to be the most common bits of unexpected animal.
Wagon Wheels. (Gelatine)
Walkers Cheese and Onion crisps (animal rennet)
Pringles pizza flavour (cochineal)
Sharps Extra-strong mints (Gelatine)
It's late. If I can think of any more I'll post them in the morn.

Can vegetarians bite their nails?

There is a new Vegan restaurant, pub and shop opened in Glasgow (with upcoming vegan clothes shop). It has it's own micro-brewery. They claim that all their products are 100% vegan. They stock Samuel Smith's beers (only place I've ever seen them North o' the Border) and Beck's.

The food's not bad. It also has a very good record store inside, but I suspect that isn't really vegan.

Is there any isinglass left in the beer / wine at the end of the process?
If not, is there any difference between drinks that have had animal products used but not retained within them and vegetables/crops which have been grown using animal products - ie bonemeal, blood, guts - which is likely to be most crops - esp "organic " ones?
