A lot of squats I have visited and have friends living in are not populated by complete bastards, but often by pretty decent people. Yep, there are some inhabited by cnuts, but far less so than the media makes out. For instance a few friends of mine - complete straight-edgers, vegans and environmental activists (both with part-time jobs) - squatted in an old, long-disused church hall with the intention of opening up part of the hall for public events like talks and film nights.. When the local rag got hold of the story they were apparently "jobless drug addicts" - and of course public anger at them grew.
