This maybe a daft question but can someone please explain the obsession with growth to me in layman's terms?

Is this simply about GDP matching population increase (though surely that isn't running at 2-3% annually in the UK or we could be doubling the population in less than 25 years)?

I didn't pay attention in O Level economics so assume I know nothing!
