The problem with Quorn is that - whilst it is technically vegetarian (i.e. there's no meat in it) - it is a long way from being an ethically sound alternative (hence the reason the Vegetarian Society refuse to endorse it). It is made with factory-farmed eggs (I'm veggie, not vegan, but I wouldn't touch a non-free-range egg with a very long pole), and it was extensively tested on animals prior to its release (including several studies on primates). I ate Quorn for a while prior to discovering this, and admit that it's the best tasting of all the meat substitutes... but why choose a meat substitute at all, if the one you choose is almost as bad as the meat it replaces? I would recommend Tival though (unless anyone can give me a reason not to...?) It's fairly plentiful in my neck of the woods, but that could be the fact that it's primarily a kosher alternative to meat, and I live in a Jewish area. Steer clear of Quorn.

Shrimp (or "Mr Mollusc" if you prefer) - give mushroom & tarragon sausages from Wicken Fen a try. They're available from places like Holland & Barrat (check out their website at www.wickenfen.co.uk for other outlets), go down great microwaved on a slice of fresh bread. Also, McSweens veggie haggis is worth a try - that is if it reaches down to the other side of the border.

Thanks to you all for the continued encouragement - it is far easier when you realise/understand/appreciate that you don't have to rigidly stick to veggidom to be a veggie. That was always the major stumbling block for me but it took me years of challenge to realise it - I now am a veggie and have no quams whatsoever in the occasional partaking in meat or meat product. A few months ago it was the other way round and I was not happy with myself now it is the other and I am at peace with my intake. My balancing may still be at odds with yours as a true to the core veggie, or vegan, or balanced veggie, or balanced vegan but so what - I am happy, you are happy and the animal world is a far far happier place. Cherish

NOOOOO!!!! This is a terrible blow! Like I said, I'm addicted to them and thought them sound enough to eat conscience-free. I'm beside myself with conflicting tastebuds and emotions. WAAAAAH!
