http://shellapologises.com/ This seems a bit serious to be a spoof so I'm wondering what's going on. They mention a May 18th AGM & I'm not sure if that's 9 months from now or the film's a couple of months old. Something tells me they're not going to take this very far. Wonder when the new new director will step in after this one's timely accident if this is above board at all. Or if it is the team who've already tried this ploy in the aftermath of the New Orleans disaster? stevo

Yeah, that's who I thought it was I think. they did something very similar in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina where they stepped up pretending to be spokesmen for a multinational or other. Or was it State Dept. Don't know why exactly this was posted on the ShellToSea discussion list today. I couldn't see a reference to which May 28th the speaker was referring to & we're quite a long way from the next one. Date on the link you've given is late March this year which makes a lot more sense. Stevo

Stevo Have'nt been following the Shelltosea discussion recently, only what is mentioned on the Tara website, but interestingly enough just had an email from Greenpeace, they seem to have just boarded the Cairn Energy rig in the Arctic from their ship Esperanza. link to GoBeyond Oil....http://www.gobeyondoil.org/ There's a video here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVZffYNauSs It goes without saying that oil drilling in pristine waters is ecologically disastrous!

moss wrote: It goes without saying that oil drilling in pristine waters is ecologically disastrous! No, no it doesn't. There's a lot of drilling goes on that doesn't upset the local environment as there's been many, many changes in the technology. It's just been found out that the Deepwater Horizon wouldn't have been a problem but for unauthorised, un-managed changes to the BOP control system just before the blow-out. I think BP are going to crucify one of their sub-contractors over it...as they should.

I think BP are going to crucify one of their sub-contractors over it...as they should. We occupy different sides of the argument, if you read what you have just written, it is pretty obvious that mistakes (manmade) occur, there is no guarantee of a 100 % safety record as far as oil rigs are concerned. They are already towing icebergs away from the Cairn Energy rig, so what happens when a very large one floats into view? The environment/oil argument can go on forever, but it is blindingly obvious that we are destroying eco-systems at a greater rate than can be renewed. Oil and ice don't mix for a start, see this report... http://blogs.reuters.com/environment/2010/05/oil-spill-on-ice-not-worth-the-risk/ I used the word 'pristine' deliberately, we have to leave places on this earth, unused, unviolated for other sentinent beings, even if it means sacrificing the 'good western life' which means less of everything for all of us and don't tell me China and India want some of it as well - I already know, plus I don't know the answer to how we can achieve a sustainable life style for everyone on this planet. But I do know that direct protest by such bodies as Greenpeace and Shellto Sea do bring the argument to a much wider audience ;)

I think my point was: it 'can be', not that it 'is' disastrous. TBH, I think the risk in the Arctic is much too great too....as I fully take your point about 'pristine' environments.
