OK, 'Big Brother' may have been a boring pile of wank so far, but I think we've just witnessed something very significant over the last couple of days. The wider implications of what has happened in that house are that Nick with his priveleged public school background and stockbroking career (and by implication many such people) has just been condemned by more forward-thinking people of his own generation. Now, say what you like about the others in that house, but the fact that they all come from a wide variety of backgrounds and showed utter dismay and incomprehension at someone doing what came 'naturally' to him, ie: fucking people over big-time in the most sickeningly self-centered Thatcherite way, is so heartening. It felt like a generation standing up, pointing at the product of '80s political thinking and saying that IT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE WAY TO BE THIS WAY. I know there must have been an element of 'Get him out and I stand more chance of winning', but it was, I hope, a reflection of a wider realisation that Greed is no longer Good and that Personal Gain by any means necessary is NOT RIGHT. I'm bound to be reading more into this than there is, but think about it. If this show had happened in the 80's we would never have seen a builder eloquently and rationally telling a stockbroker he is upset and emotional at how he has been fucked over by him. The subliminal sociological implications of this show on its 5 million viewers actually do give me some hope for the future.

What ever you think of the motive behind the whole Big Brother vibe I consider that the Lord has a good point in question here. For me the whole character of Nick be it nasty or plain complete bastard and especially the eyes reminded me so much of the tory campaign against toni tim with those blood shot evil eyes. Saatchi and Scratchie need not look very far for the next campaign! and on the subject of Big Brother watching you - who is it who actually sits and watches behind all those banks of screens from CCTV cameras which are set up in all our back yards. Does the profession have a title - ie Wanted Big Brother, duties involve spying on the day to day activities of the populace. Do you need a qualification and is your background checked out?

Another aspect that I found interesting was the token irish man suggesting that me felt pity for such an arsehole because he would have to face the outside and especially his family. I bet Nick's dad will give him a damn good spanking because he failed to win! And what would you do with the money if you had won it - 'well I would go on a holiday and give some to charity' absolute bollocks!!! and now for the obligaTORY book deal and maybe a few chat shows and see the £$£$£$£'s apear. Me I'm off to join the circus!

Hmmm. I agree with your summing up of "Nasty Nick" . The eyes say it all.... But this is odd. Big Brother is turning into survival of the dullest...the bland leading the bland. If you think about it, all he boat-rockers and actual "characters" have been ejected. Fact: all these people had one main objective...get on TV. But look what we've got...it's a Blairite dream come true: the inoffensive.. the mundane rule the roost. Big Brother is now gonna be people being unbearably civil to each other. Don't get me wrong...in the real world that's lovely but TV?!!!! Hopefully Nick's replacement will be another boarderline psycho. One consolation is that I imagine that any one of us on here would have been kicked out after day 3! Hee hee heee! Bless MC

Lucan's point that 'If this show had happened in the 80's we would never have seen a builder eloquently and rationally telling a stockbroker he is upset and emotional at how he has been fucked over by him' is dead right; the way the whole bunch handled it was astonishingly humane and cinsiderate, overtly saying that they didn't want to humiliate him, and using it as a reason to pity and analyse Nick rather than to provoke anger or vengeance. I found it genuinely moving when Craig told Nick that if you treat people that way then you end up winning everything but friends, and he'll be very lonely if he doesn't change. That this was a consensus opinion of the group is so encouraging, particularly in the light of the neo-fascist stuff that's been going on with alleged paedophiles being hounded from their homes. This latter thing has been directly engineered by the National Front (sorry, the National Democrrats as they now call themselves), and seeks violence and vengeance over humanity, inclusivity and actual solutions to the fucked-upness that's so deeply in all of us. Who'd've thunk Big Brother would inspire such positivity and hope?

Point taken, but the Big Brother show, & the mass national hysteria surrounding it, kinda trivialises, rather bypasses George Orwell's message in '1984'. As the contestants themselves point out with their brilliantly tuneful song - "it's only a gameshow". Exactly - a gameshow that glorifies Big Brother & CCTV, glamorises voyeurism and makes quite a few people richer in the process. What's all this "We have installed CCTV cameras for your increased safety" that you see on the bus/in the street/just about everywhere these days? Surely does it not mean that if you ARE going to be the victim of an attack, it will just be FILMED? "Thatcher was cunning - she had a hidden VCR & the footage was stunning...."

Yeah, it's a bit galling to think that while CCTV may result in some evil perps being captured, you may well end up as someone's entertainment as you get your head kicked in at the cash point. Nick Ross or someone solemnly intones "It was as the blood gushed down the drain that the police eventually responded. Gratuitous Close-ups of the assault after the break" Hmph! Just hope they get my good side! :>(
