Honestly, I truly believe that the 'conservatives' (biggest irony in a name, ever) know that the environment is being destroyed, the ones that aren't totally loonytunes, anyway. So why do they dismiss the greens? Perhaps the psychology of these people is slightly different from one place to another... In the USA I get the distinct impression that the right wing is almost COUNTING on environmental collapse... they WELCOME it, figuring that THEY will be able to BUY THEIR WAY OUT WHILE BiLLIONS OF "LESSER PEOPLE" DIE. The ultra-right wing 'survivalists' don't make any bones about THEIR fantasies, namely, having civilization collapse so that they can freely shoot 'the scum' that they envision will be rampaging out of the cities. I'm hardly exaggerating. They long for lawlessness.

You've made an excellent point there. Although the 'survivalist' faction isn't in the UK, I think that are some who would instinctively react that way. The level of apathy with some people is infuriating, and I have come across examples of what I had read of 'air crash syndrome', when after the initial outbreak of shock and panic, a strange subdued acceptance can occur. That is truly disturbing, and I do believe that this is happening along with the psychological self defense mechanism of denial in many people. As for the conglomerates, media moguls and their political lap dogs, they don't give a fuck. Literally. It's all jam today, and they don't care about future generations, as they're not at all bothered if there aren't any.

Funny how they always imagine it's *them* that's gonna survive and people they don't know and/or don't like that die off. The Sea Cat wrote: The level of apathy with some people is infuriating, and I have come across examples of what I had read of 'air crash syndrome', when after the initial outbreak of shock and panic, a strange subdued acceptance can occur. I think the main cause of this is the slowness of ecological collapse. From an ecological perspective, we're in the middle of another rapid major extinction event. But from the perspective of a human life, nothing much is changing. This is where, I'm sad to admit, the comparisons with how we responded to the Nazi threat crumble. Environmental activists like to cite the way we turned the economy round in months to producing items of necessity, that everyone scaled back consumption for the greater good, and the sense of 'all in it together' was so positive that despite the privation and bloodshed many of those who lived through it stayed nostalgic for that feeling for the rest of their lives. It's certainly the sort of response that climate change and peak oil demand of us. However, massing troops on the French coast and bombers attacking cities feels very different to the present threats. They are less immediate. And, crucially, by the time we do start to feel the first effects - the equivalent of those first raids - it will be far far too late to do anything about it. Even the US government says we need a crash programme at least 20 years long ahead of the peaking of oil production if we're gonna avoid catastophe. And we're are very likely to be past deadline on that already. It's like the way that, despite the fact that tobacco kills a third of its users, you can't use the threat of cancer to discourage 12 year olds The Sea Cat wrote: As for the conglomerates, media moguls and their political lap dogs, they don't give a fuck. Literally. It's all jam today I think that's true, their prime motivation is profit and all other concerns - even the survival of the biosphere - are secondary. But I also think they suffer from the same thing the rest of us do, namely that we think the future will be like now. Humans have a strong, seemingly hardwired, belief in that, even though all of history tries to tell us otherwise.

And it gets worse - they're scrapping the sustainable Development Commission too. Despite the fact that its advice saves the government several times what it costs. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jul/20/sustainability-watchdog-axed-cuts
