Oh right. Sorry. I see it now. Chaos theory means it's impossible to predict anything, especially not the weather. Thanks. You just changed my world. I'm going to have to stop doing my job. Something as complex as a traffic system cannot be predicted. I'll be killed for sure if I try to drive.

Also, was this the one where they did the experiment in front of a top gear audience? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/8418356.stm I particularly liked the bit about 8 minutes in, where the presenter harangued the scientist for an apology, then cut him off in the middle of apologising. :) Here, by the way, is a video of CO2 absorbing infra-red energy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeYfl45X1wo This despite the chaos theory, brownian motion, and all the rest of it.

Rather a pathetic experiment which bears no relationship to the complex system that produces climate. Perfect for a Top Gear audience though. If it impressed you, it tells me a lot.

You answered it yourself. Chaos theory means you can't predict the weather beyond a few days, as small errors in the starting measurements have unpredictable effects on the outcome. It's one of the classic examples!!! Ever hear of butterflies in relation to chaos theory? It is rather old. The same principle applies to climate. 1. We don't accurately know the starting conditions (HUGE understatement!). 2. We don't know for sure how all the factors interact. Therefore, attempts at prediction are futile. Goodnight. |

The Newsnight I referred to originally was tonight. That's what the word "just" implies...

But... But... Nah. Forget the millions of years of evidence. Forget the refining of models until they can predict accurately how one point in the past can lead to a later point in the past. Forget how a model that has proved itself to be accurate can be in any way extrapolated into the future. Forget everything except turning this computer off and going to bed. I have a pupil on test in a few scant hours.
