China is a huge country and I'm sure there are nuances in opinion even within the party elite. If they get convinced it's in their own interest, changes will be made.

Could be 'something' in that.

Anecdotes of history aside, China's dependency on world trade I'm sure increases by the day, and the strength of its economy depends in it, right?

So, and feck knows how this works, but I'm sure that Google is affiliated to this which is affiliated to that which somewhere along the line could spell a major financial hole over there, should it implode a bit.

Should Google dig its heels in, something 'might' have to give, maybe.

Tyrants seem to believe they and their tyrannies will live forever. History clearly shows they don't.

The day might come when they realize they're not living on a planet of their own.

Well I'm getting quite impatient waiting. Sure tyrannies never last but they almost always last longer than they deserve IMO.

Huge is the word. And therein lies the problem for the authorities. How will they maintain the brainwashing of this enormous population with so many different cultures and ethnic groups when more and more information is getting both in and out. I firmly believe it will be impossible in the long run. Their censorship is far from being 100% effective.

Don't forget that China has been a unified nation since practically the beginning of recorded history... and the predominate philosophy there is based on Confucianism, which dictates social order and obedience.

It's not just that the Chinese are living under a specific ruling party, they really do have a different way of thinking.

We westerners often fail to understand that our attempts to export our beliefs to the rest of the world fail because of some pretty deep and ancient cultural divides that are internalized from birth.

This is why the struggle to democratize Afghanistan is such an uphill battle. That region has been under the grip of feudalism for a longggg time.

I believe the eagerness of the Chinese authorities to censor and even execute dissidents tells a different story. They're afraid of their own people, and not without reason. In some areas there's even been violent revolts against corrupt party officials.

I have a suspicion that what the authorities fear the most is not western ideas but the free exchange of information amongst the Chinese people themselves about corruption and abuse of power.
