Quote: "Google compromised heavily in order to further their own expansion plans into Asia. They knew this shit would happen, anyone with the remotest insight into how China functions knew this would happen. Why the surprise ? Also, why on earth are they even trying to get uppity about it now ? they 'will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to china" ahahaha.. Those decisions were removed from the board the moment they floated their company, who are they trying to kid ?" You're probably right, but there was a glimpse of hope there I tried to cling to. ;o)

Aye I know what you mean. Same here in the hope dept. There is a possibility they are trying to force peoples hands though. Maybe they do actually think they're big enough to throw their weight around now (and by god, they are big in raw financial terms). Still, it does mean we are relying on massive undemocratically run (in terms that we don't vote for them, and to influence them you have to be extraordinarily rich to buy a controlling share) corporations to sort out our human rights. Which.. um isn't a good thing, but fuck it, lets see how it plays out and how far they're prepared to go.

Yeah there's another reason why China sucks! They put cadmium in cheap toy jewelry. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=aqe1Kh.dEMd8 The whole country's not only brutal and fascistic but utterly corrupt and cheap-minded as well. They don't care about the welfare of their own people or their trading partners'...

The statements by the Chinese official here are really telling. It's as if they don't even understand the importance of intellectual freedom. Of course, they do, it's just that instead of seeing it as a strength, they see it as a threat. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/15/world/asia/15beijing.html

Business News has something similar 'Internet companies abiding by the laws are welcome'. Of course the Chinese Govt always obey the rules. Fat chance................

It's what to be expected I suppose; anything that can undermine the total power of the party elite is seen as a very bad thing. Maybe the party elite can do very well without Google, but if loosing Google would be "bad for business" some of the more pragmatic party officials could be tempted to open up a bit. It'll be interesting to see what Google does next.

These are people who brutally murdered hundreds of democracy protesters. They aren't going to allow their own people to question the party's dominance.
