Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, 87, has died in Iran. He supported the 'Green People Opposition' movement and students against the current powers. This info flashed onto my screen: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126129141238099009.html

The old gaurd Mullah's have got to go. They are the one's who pull the string's . Not Ahmahdinagab{sp?} I know little of this Ayatollah in particular, but if he supported the opposition and protesters in the last election...it's a loss of forward momentum. That's the D1 point of view this evening.

It's hard to say how much the guy's loss represents. He seemed very much a progressive minded individual as far as Iran is concerned. I do hope a like minded sort is in procession for his seat too. But just the same, Religous clerics running a country that want's to arm themselves with Nuclear weapons...and has denied Israels right to exist? I do wish the Green Party had won that last election though. Would have been a real interesting thing to see how the politics in the region could have changed.

It's encouraging to see the revolution in Iran swinging back towards a more open, free society. The hardliners have broken down and admitted that they beat protesters to death in detention earlier this year. They'll try to do what the Bush White House did with Abu Graib... blame it on subordinates... but it's clear to everyone that the problem is top-down. Here's hoping the IDF doesn't freak out and attack Iran... which would blow whatever momentum the opposition there has in changing their own country from the inside, which is how it should be.

The story that arms from North Korea were intercepted by Thailand and deaths of three political activists are also of great concern. Good on Thailand tho.

Another case of the powers that be in Iran ignoring their own people, or even worse torturing them!

Yeah...North Korea. A good deal of the small arms that the Palestinians keep firing from the west bank have there origin's there. There's no winning the game were all playing.

I'll rejoin the debate later today D1, and put up anything the UK papers say along with any views I have.
