Swiss Minaret ban
Nov 29, 2009, 16:04
Just curious, what's the take on this?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34191036/ns/world_news-europe/

Are the swiss just trying to preserve there culture?
Or is this racism?
Or what?

What ridiculous logic. Ban minarets to combat militant Islam? The minaret is no more offensive than the bell tower of a church and serves the same function.

There's definitely an element of racism here. It's a blatant use of majority rule to suppress religious freedom of a minority populace.

You might as well ban beards, which is what the dictatorship of Turkey did. I mean I can understand the fear of militant Islam but this is just reactionary...

It's not racism as Islam is not a race. So it's an -ism, but what is it apart from Islam-o-phobia?

At least the Swiss govt says this is damaging, as I believe there is in their constitution which allows voting on matters to occur - is that plebicsite or a plebocrasy??

Actually it is Racism as well.

I see it more as 'culturalism' than 'racism', and although I am not at all racist I will admit to be 'culturalist' at times, if ye get me.
The full veil and all that..I just don't get it, and it unnerves me. There, said it.

However, this is simply an exercise in casting a certain group of people to the shadows, which is no good. Allowed can pray but not dispaly a bit of associated symbolism.

Haven't heard any proper argument 'for' other than 'they're taking over' sort of thing.

I think I heard someone fear this may end up in a ban on other things Islamic, which is no good.

It's stupid is what it is. Kind of undermines the whole image of Switzerland being chilled and tolerant too.

Ban cuckoo clocks!

(Keep the chocolate though)

I'd call it racism, and fairly random racism at that. I'm surprised the Swiss aren't more tolerant than that but that in itself may be a vaguely racist statement (stereotyping and making assumptions about the Swiss culture!) Seriously though, I think it's very wrong, and I'm worried there may be some kind of backlash.
