The army should have just discharged the guy.

What does the military expect when it keeps redacting these guys? And sending them back, over and over again, into these ugly, endless fronts with no end in sight?

People finally WILL snap. Most internalize it... and then you get the occasional human bomb, like this guy.

So easily prevented. What a horror.

Obama called the killing of 12 people 'a horrific outburst of violence'. As opposed to, say, what those people were just about to be deployed to do.

yah, war is bad m'kay. *sigh*

Seriously though, whats your thoughts re:Afghanistan. Leave it to the Taliban ? Sure, I mean, theres no really good reason for any of us to be there, but I'm genuinely interested in your ideas.

Apart from the awful nature of the incident it's going to come over really badly that the guy was a Muslim, regardless of his military service. I can imagine how Fox News and the like are gonna play this out.

Bad news in every sense.

I saw a newsflash showing CCTV of him in a local Texas store, stating that he was in traditional dress. He was not wearing a Stetson and a Nudie suit for sure, but they failed to state he was a muslim.

It's been mentioned on the BBC a few times. Apparently he was quite devout.

It's a contributing factor as to why he flipped out, no question. There's a bias against Muslims in the military that's officially not supposed to be there, but it's there. Imagine being a Muslim counselor who listens to horror stories all day long from returning soldiers that are being sent to shoot other Muslims, knowing that you really have no home anywhere in this fucked up world.

I'd love to see the Taliban mentality disappear... it's medieval. But are we just helping to recruit more people for THEIR side by applying military force to the problem? Seemingly so.

So far, Osama Bin Laden has been very successful in carrying out his strategy, which is to bankrupt the USA by drawing them into an endless guerilla war.

If I could just jump in here Stray, with a....Maybe.....

Maybe they could/should 'leave it to the Taliban', but then again, the civilians and 'ordinary working folk' would be tortured/massacred by the Taliban.....that is of course, if they didn't 'join' the Taliban.

If that happens, then there would be a whole lot more Taliban, then they'd fully take over Afghanistan and then move on to Pakistan etc. etc.

btw- I'm just pondering!

I wish there were no western troops there at all, it's a horrible situation.

My mate's lad is over there in Helmand Province.
His Dad is a quiet, meek and mild sort, just played in all types of bands since he was a teenager, against war etc., yet his son was unemployed and wanted to get a trade etc., he's cut from a different cloth and obviously belongs to a totally different generation and so opted for the army.
His Dad couldn't really stop him joining up at the age of 19.

There's lots of UK families in a similar situation.
It must be hell for everyone involved, whether they're living east, west or all points inbetween.
