English Defence League - In Manchester
Oct 10, 2009, 18:16
Just wandered into town to see what was going on with this protest thing. Near as I can see there's a few of the English Defence Muppets standing around with a few placards and quite of lot of people standing around gawping at them including what looks like a fair sum from the United Against Facism folk.

Quite a lot of police including a helicopter buzzing about overhead. I've heard there's been about 30 arrests one of which was for somebody carrying a weapon of some sort. I don't know which team they were playing for.

Apart from that, not much going on it seems.

This is Moon Cat reporting for HH Uknow, about to go to the shop and get some groceries, Manchester.

ps If the EDL are a legit protesting organisation with no connections to the extreme right and/or as is alleged, former known football hooligans out for 'avin a larf', how come they hide their faces when being interviewed on telly?

Just what England needs, another hate group. Gah!

Well a couple of days ago there was an anti-war protest in Rochester New York that went violent. Apparently they were blocking a fire truck on it's way to a service call and that didn't turn the police on much. (Or that's how the story went anyways...)

Oh, and I just looked at their website. Looks like a British version of Free Republic to me...

This was staged on a weekend when the top two divisions are shut down for internationals and they still only got 2000. There were more than that at Bury v Northampton.

Still, it gives the media something to get antsy about now that the party conferences are over. Especially as it seems we're actually not all going to die from swine flu (remember the "Hyde Park Ear-Marked For Massive Burial Site" story?).

The rest of Manachester going about its business not giving a toss is the real story isn't it?

Yup. Loads of plod by the station though, more than you'd get for a fairly contentious footy match. I imagine they were probably erring on the side of caution after a similar 'event' kicked off in Birmingham recently. The EDL seemed to consist of the disparingly cliched sight of few gormless looking shaven headed lads stood about venting minor-spleen and looking a bit silly.
Let's face it, the upper echelons of the far-right basically use these hapless goons as cannon fodder anyway.

Y'know what it's like; conference finishes but you feel you could do with another couple of nights boozing...
