G20 officer charged with assault

Not Ian Tomlinson's attacker, that's still to play out. But the one who assaulted the woman on the 2nd April at the memorial rally for Tomlinson

is to be charged with assault

Remember the rich irony of one of Rodney King's assaulting officers being Officer Koon? Well the copper who attacked the soap dodging ne'er-do-wells was - I shit you not - Sergeant Smellie.

That did bring a smile to my face when that was on the news yesterday. His first name is Delroy, so presumably his mates call him Delly Smellie...

Positive too that the right thing's being done.
Ain't it great we got the power of the £20 mobile camera phone?

Seriously, the whole Vid camera in a phone thing must really shit the bad police up.

It gives everyone a voice and evidence of abuse, violence etc. Can only be a good thing

Well, we'll see when it gets to court. to invoke the Rodney King thing again, Koon and friends were acquitted first time round.

And in the case of Sergeant Smellie, if the woman had assaulted him instead, do we think it would have taken 6 months for it to get to charges being brought?

Were that it were so. There's been footage like this at demo after demo for years. On the evening of April 1st, even though there had been hours of mainstream and citizen footage shot of police violence, the mainstream media were saying how restrained the police had been, just like they've done at countless other events that the police have strategically assaulted people at.

The media only revised their judgement when it came out that someone had died.

If it weren't for Ian Tomlinson's death, that footage would still exist but the outrage would only be the preserve of Indymedia and anti-capitalist bloggers.

Maybe we need to get all Joanna Lumley on their ass.
Soon as it looks like they 'could' do the right thing praise and coerce em to the hilt until they do. Don't by rote pit yerself against them, even though you may be.
Worked for her anyway;-)

We'll be waiting a long time for that day.

i just don't buy the idea Pooley posits of 'bad' police out there, implying that there were 'good' ones. Take a look at the wading in to crowds - it was premeditated, calculated, a strategic order. Which of the hundreds of police ordered to do it - to unlawfully assault people - refused? I can count them on the thumbs on my feet.

You don't even fancy a different approach?
I learned very quickly that if I mire myself in all that's negative about my daughter's behaviour she won't bother changing because she'll reckon it's what I expect of her. Achieves nothing, except surefire misery an all sides.
'Twas a bit of a wry comment anyway, but who knows.
