http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8237886.stm A judge has ruled that keeping a m2f transexual in a male prison is a breach of her human rights. overturned a ruling by that lovely Jack Straw that the transexual should be detained amongst males. Nice to see some good news I reckon.

Nice to see some good news I reckon. "The prisoner is serving an automatic "two strikes" life sentence for manslaughter "by reason of provocation of her male partner" in 2001, and attempted rape of a female stranger days after her release from that five-year manslaughter term. She has been eligible for parole since 2007, but has been considered a continuing risk to the public." Not so 'good news' for the family and relatives of the slaughtered and the person who suffered the attempted rape though! 'Eligible for parole since 2007' Good ol' British justice eh....what a fucking joke.

I do wish news reports give reasons why 'for legal reasons' information is witheld, its part of being informed by news, and part of the definate need for the public to understand civic's I cannot see why the identity of the prisoner is being embargo'd especially for his/her heinous crimes. On a lighter note, in all the prison based films I have seen there is always one such character per prison.

Quite right. We should return to an eye for an eye. Since this person raped, it's only fitting that they should themselves be raped repeatedly over a period of years. We're going soft.

As it states at the end of the piece, I can't see how living in a women's prison is going to enable this person to 'live as a woman', which is a pre requisite as preperation for the big op. Obviously that's the intention. If anything in such a setting they'll be a great target for piss taking, which might just cause even greater confusion for them, and perhaps make em even more imbalanced. A 'Mr Garrison' complex might just come about then, or worse. Not so cut and dry IMO. x

Wow! Behold the sarcasm king! I'm just one of those weirdos that feels sorry for the victims of crime, not to mention the hell their families have to go through, especially when criminals get sentenced to just a few years in jail for killing someone.

"I'm just one of those weirdos that feels sorry for the victims of crime" For goodness sake. So anyone who cares about prisoner's rights and conditions doesn't feel sorry for the victims of crime? Is that what you are saying? If not, what is that line supposed to mean? x

I think you have to ask yourself what you want to achieve. Unless we choose to keep prisoners locked away until they die, they have to be released back into society at some point. If you've spent the time they were incarcerated, brutalising and abusing them, they're not going to come out as well adjusted productive people. It's as much pragmatism as wooly-minded liberalism really, even if this article is from the Guardian... http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/nov/14/norway-prison-erwin-james
