I was only 14 when it all kicked off, but my Father is of the opinion that - (and correct me if there's actual facts to disprove) - Thatcher, seeking re-election removed the protection vessel 'HMS Endurance' from the Falklands and cancelled a new military base. By doing so, the Argentinians took that as an 'invite to invade', which they did followed by Thatcher feigning outrage and wanting to stand-by the people and sovereignty of the Falklands...
Hence the war and subsequent re-election of the Iron Lady.
