Rolling Stone have done a pretty thorough hatchet job onMcCain too, based partly upon his ancestry. http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain

McCains are remembered for being fair. John loved the former plantation groundsbecause it was a constant, during a childhood of many moves. Cousin owns 1500 acres now, has reestablished contact with African American McCains. Who for the most part have moved on, done well, and are all voting for Obama.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of trying to pull McCain's family history into any sort of attack on him. It essentially condones the idea that we're somehow guilty for the sins of our dead relatives. I don't think McCain ought to be dragged into this arena, unless he has stated somewhere that he thinks slavery was justified. If anything, the McCain camp can use this as an arguing point that the McCain's have allegedly been fair with their authority in comparison to the status quo. Probably best to leave this one alone.

Obviously McCain hadn't even been born at the time slavery happened in the US. How would he be culpable?

A good read that. Makes me cringe even more intensely when he comes out with the stuff about how he served his country.
