Thank You!
Jul 25, 2000, 19:26
Haven't been around this past week (been to Aberdeenshire for a stone circle freak out), so I was well pleased to come back and see the great article Merrick wrote about veganism, as well as his postings here. And thank you to Merrick, and everyone else who has supplied recipes. I was very interested to read the discussion and different attitudes towards vegetarianism/veganism here and I have come to one important conclusion. Making people feel guilty is *not* the way forward. Informing people is clearly very important, but thrown in with a little bit of empathy and understanding makes the argument that much more effective. Well done, Merrick.

As I said in one of me earlier postings, I've yet to see a vegan cheese that isn't plasticy stuff that tastes like vinegar and socks. That said, I sometimes do some Scheese grated up and liberally sprinkled on toast with sliced apple.

But don't let your cheese fixation be an excuse for not cutting out all other animal products if that's what you're aiming for. If you're gonna do it incrementally, why not save the best/hardest till last.

And when the time comes, most people find they really don't miss it after a while.

And your subconscious helps you out by making your memory play tricks and let you believe vegan bacon/cheese/whatever is something like the real thing.

Good luck!

I agree with you there master merrick. The longer I go without meat the easier and more natural it becomes. One of the harder bits was to stop buying it! Going vegan may even be in my grasp for the future!

Must admit however to having a handfull of winegums over the weekend but then I was offered some more and I smelled them and the beef gelatin was so obnoxious it put me off. Getting there - slowly but surely. One step - One day at a time.

You're gettin ambitious Shrimpy!! Vegan possibilities indeed! Glad to hear that you're keeping on with the vegetarian lifestyle - it does get easier. Having had my"conscience pricked" I'm aiming to cut out milk next week - though I've relied heavily on dairy produce for years, and I feel I need to go slowly and in stages - milk first, then butter, then cheese. Can anyone help with what are vegan spreads? I was looking the other day in Tesco's - one of the soya spreads said it was vegan OK but had mono & di-glycerides of fatty acids in - can I be sure they're from a vegan source??
