Yeah - noticed the new caring, sharing, fluffy BP with its flowery, feathery cutey green logo. Have you seen the piss-taking ads from Shell recently in all manner of mags & sunday supplements? One incensed me so much that I just had to e-mail the bastards & tell em what I thought. (tell-shell@si.shell.com) The headline goes: "Time & again at Shell we're discovering the rewards of respecting the environment when doing business.." (!!!!!) AND WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT THEY ANSWERED BACK! Very polite, (like, you know, they're on our side), and in absolute painstaking detail with reference to their Annual Reports & meeting Sub-directive 254.3.6a etc... Basically TOO MUCH information - I'm sure bureaucracy is one of their ways of dealing with criticism. For anyone vaguely interested, here's some outakes (Sorry but this may be excruicatingly long):- "Thank you for taking the time to respond with your opinions about Shell and for giving us the chance to reply. For me that's one of the most important things that our advertisements do - encourage people to ask questions or challenge us, giving us the chance to respond to and learn from them. We are not trying to "pull the wool" over the eyes of anybody. It is precisely those informed and aware people that we would like to engage in dialogue. The campaign's purpose is to raise the debate surrounding the behaviour of large corporations like ours. Neither are we trying to "kid" people, but are trying more to open ourselves to the external challenge and understanding that was lacking in the past.. We learnt the hard way that we were (and perhaps still are) painfully unaware of what society expects us to do - we weren't listing to a wide enough range of people. We recognise that it is only through our actions and the evidence of our actions - which will only appear with time - that people will really be able to see whether we live up to our promises and whether what some refer to as 'greenwash' is really just PR or not. I don't believe that PR is what changes many people's minds about companies like Shell but I do think that if our campaign encourages more people to enter a dialogue with us or even just to discuss the issues amongst themselves then I think its worthwhile. Going to your specific points, the nature of Shell's business is not to bleed the earth dry in the name of greed and profit. It is to supply energy in the most responsible way that we can. In this respect we believe Sustainable Development --that is integrating economic prosperity, environmental responsibility and social development into our business and meeting our stakeholders' expectations - is the only way forward. We articulate our views about Sustainable Development and give examples of concrete actions in the Shell Report - an annual report in which we show group companies progress in embodying the principles of Sustainable Development. Here is one of a few places where we report upon the real evidence of our actions and the places where we still need to do better...."

It depends on what type of method is being used to create the electricity, and yes, just plugging in and recharging is a cleaner alternative than fossil fuels as long as they aren't being used to generate the electricity. Choose your poison time again, Hydro-schemes, nuclear power, both supposedly clean, yet both wrought with disastrous possibilities. An interesting study was done on solar power recently. If we annexed one desert, and filled it with photo-voltaic cells, and used the electricity to split and transport hydrogen, the worlds fuel needs could be met via fuel cells technology, using this hydrogen. The only waste product? - water. It's a thought.

'...integrating economic prosperity, environmental responsibility and social development into our business and meeting our stakeholders' expectations - is the only way forward.' That is a generic (bullshit) term for saying 'when our back's are against the wall, we've still got to maintain our hold on the market' http://www.mcspotlight.org/beyond/oil.html I for one will not forget Ken Saro Wiwa. Shell would love to!

In my rant to them I mentioned the 'shadier' side of their operations in Nigeria and they skilfully avoided the topic of Saro Wiwa & their ties to military / death squads. "You mentioned Nigeria and may be interested to know that claims by some activists that SPDC (Shell in Nigeria) uses environmental practices in Nigeria that are worse than those in Europe and North America, ostensibly taking advantage of weak environmental legislation, are not correct. In fact, Nigeria is party to all relevant international environmental conventions and her environmental laws are based on the US Federal Environmental Protection Agency standards, and, in some cases (such as oil-ground water ratio) exceed the requirements of comparable regulations in the US and Europe. Although they were revised in 1992, SPDC is currently at over 93 per cent compliance of the legislation and aims to achieve full compliance by the end of the year...." (BLAH BLAH BULLSHIT BULLSHIT)

Those self charging cars have a diesel engine in them which takes over when needed, and generates electricity while it's running. So, it's a small step in the right direction, but you still need to use combustion half the time - and the electricity used is created by belching out your own personal smoke, rather than a power plant's...
