World War Three?
Feb 12, 2002, 14:51
"Non-Americans (ie, 95 per cent of the world) do not understand that Americans are actually proud of that picture of the US soldier brandishing the belts and shackles and handcuffs and chains used on prisoners... Americans can be a bloodthirsty lot, ...they revel in a vicarious, John
Waynesque approach of being "tough" towards their perceived foes. What other national anthem exults in "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air" as the US one does in its fifth line? Americans weep freely when the likes of Ray Charles sing 'God Bless America'. "The US is now a country of such unchallengeable power that it can and does create its own moral and humanitarian stances; it does not need to listen to outsiders."
WASHINGTON - In an extensive multi-part story about the Bush Administration in the aftermath of 11 September, this small paragraph buried deep in a multi-page story in The Washington Post: "The president said he didn't want other countries dictating terms or conditions for the war on terrorism. 'At some point,' the president said, 'we may be the only ones left. That's okay with me. We are America.' "

"America is on the war path, the American cavalry is riding high trumpets blaring, "Manifest Destiny" didn't end and now extends globally, and as today's FINANCIAL TIMES headlines: America is "Spreading Alarm Among Friends", not to mention to the impact it is having on enemies and other great powers, especially
China at this point in history.
Indeed, there are many astute observers who believe the tremendous Pentagon and CIA build-up now underway is really a new kind of cold war designed to put down all opposition to American hegemony and prepare for a possible future conflict with the Chinese."

Ron, help me Ron????

Isn't old George off to Beijing next week to discuss missiles and dollars?

How many millennia does it take humankind to achieve such a perfect state of global civility as we currently enjoy?

I'm off for a holiday, this sarcasm doesn't suit me.

Politicians are wankers.

plenty of them, i imagine actually morfe me old mucker. take the following lines (which are pretty representative of the whole):
>
> 'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
> We'll chant a soldier's song...
>
OR
>
> We're children of a fighting race,
> That never yet has known disgrace,
> And as we march, the foe to face,
> We'll chant a soldier's song
>
and finish with a rousing...
>
> Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
> So chant a soldier's song!
>
(the irish national anthem - the title of which translates as "Soldier's Song")

i suspect it's not unusual for national anthems to feature those kind of lyrics - given that many nations were originally formed out of armed struggle and/or revolution.

Just found this site:
http://www.copcity.com/anthems/anthems.html

The first three anthems i clicked on (Albania, Algeria and Angola) all had at least one line about being victorious in armed conflict. In fact the Algerian anthem opens with the lines:
>
> We swear by the lightning that destroys,
> By the streams of generous blood being shed,
>

i don't have the time to do a definitive survey of the proportion of anthems that speak of the glory of battle or the subjugation of others; but 3 out of 3 (6 out of 6 if you include Ireland, UK and USA) is a telling start.

For someone with the time on their hands - the above site is pretty damn comprehensive (though i'm sure you could find a few omissions).

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
Oh, save us all!

Not quite as bomb happy as the yanks, but close!

Now the Mexicans Know How To Party
Feb 12, 2002, 15:38
Mexicans, at the cry of battle
prepare your swords and bridle;
and let the earth tremble at its center
at the roar of the cannon.

Oh fatherland
Your forehead shall be girded with olive garlands,
by the divine archangel of peace
For in heaven your eternal destiny
has been written by the hand of God.

But should a foreign enemy dale to
profane your land with his sole,
Think, beloved fatherland, that heaven
gave you a soldier
in each son.

War, war without truce against who would attempt
to blemish the honor of the fatherland!
War, war! The patriotic banners
drench in waves
of blood.

War, war! On the mount, in the valley
The terrifying thunder of the cannon

And the echoes nobly
resound to the cries of
Union!
Liberty!

Fatherland, before your children

Become unarmed
Beneath the yoke their necks in sway,
And your countryside be watered with blood,
On blood their
feet trample.

And may your temples, palaces and towers
crumble in horrid
crash,
and ruins remain
saying:
The fatherland was made of one thousand heroes.

Fatherland, fatherland, your children swear
to exhale their breath in your cause,
If the bugle in its belligerent tone
should call upon them to struggle with bravery.

For you the olive garlands!

For them a memory of glory!

For you a laurel of victory!

For them a tomb of honor!

jeez - now that one is truly full-on.

oddly enough, one of the most violent societies around at the moment - Nigeria - has a pretty wonderful anthem as jingoistic ditties go. the second verse goes a bit like:
>
> O God of creation,
> Direct our noble cause;
> Guide our Leaders right:
> Help our Youth the truth to know,
> In love and honesty to grow,
> And living just and true,
> Great lofty heights attain,
> To build a nation where peace and justice reign.
>
better than most... just a pity they've yet to fulfill the wish for a place "where peace and justice reign".

How right you old Grufter,

but ROCKETS AND BOMBS for fucks sake.

America is the most dangerous joke I ever heard, all other imperialist dictatorships seem less scary on account of the US seems to suck up and fuck up huge amounts of hope, peace and money whilst wearing a Goofy costume and passing out candy bars made from shit, by slaves.

How about 'Armed with a mighty rush, rebellious Scots to crush' in of the less droned verses of God Save our Queen...
