Well, for a start, they're not vegetarians. Just picky eaters dressing it up a conscience. You don't eat meat because you don't like it? Fine. Becasue you don't like the idea of it? Fine. Just don't try and claim some moral high ground.

Hats off to you. See, you can take the moral high ground.

I suppose there is the argument that every little helps or something. (NB. committed carnivore)

Hmmmm. I really don't think you can generalise. I was a quite strict vegetarian for 17 years (longer than I'd not been one) and was then told that my health problems, while not caused by my vegetarian diet, would be eased by eating fish regularly.

I spent a fair while considering the dilemma. In the end I decided to put my health before my morals. That was a difficult - and weird - decision to have to make. It hasn't been a miracle cure of course, but two years after putting fish back into my diet I've noticed very clear benefits.

These days I don't describe myself as "a vegetarian" (as I'm clearly not walking the walk). All the same, I do still talk the talk. Politically speaking I'm vegetarian (if that makes sense). If asked, I will argue passionately in favour of vegetarianism. There's no doubt in my mind that it is the correct ethical and environmental choice. My personal decision to prioritise my health doesn't change that. So I certainly don't feel like a "picky eater dressing it up in a conscience".

Note: if you are going to eat fish it is possible to be more and/or less ethical in your choice. For information on sustainable fisheries, the following websites are good starting points...

The main dietry benefits of fish are Omega Oils & Calcium aren't they? Surely these could be supplemented easily*?

*Unless your needs were not either of the above, natch.

N.B. Easy for me to say as I'll eat anything that isn't green.

Which was sort of my point. Unfortuntely I of course expressed this in my usual cack-handed manner.

I used to go out with someone that insisted they were vegetarian and ate chicken.
