When I hitch, half the people who stop are locals and no use to me. I get choked by their fumes but I need them for my journey. But I recognise that we should probably just keep putting the price of petrol up, as it will help in the long run and we'll just get used to it like we always do .

Maybe your slightly cynical but "realistic" stance works for now. I think that humans will have to die before/during autogeddon, and I don't mean by rebellioin. I think car culture will have to get too bad until the Mother says "Enough" and kills off some of us.
Those who tried and died will be "Drudes" instead of saints; those who didn't will simply die. Then the rest of us will say "I told you so" to the rest of the planks and hopefully we can heal ourselves and the planet. That's as positive as I can be.
