Just arrived back home after a lovely pre-Summer Solstice weekend in Avebury. Is anyone going to Stonehenge for Wednesday morning? I'm hoping to.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR SUMMER SOLSTICE

AT STONEHENGE 21 JUNE 2000

English Heritage is pleased to be providing managed open access to Stonehenge over the summer solstice 2000. This is the first time the site has been open to the public over the summer solstice since 1984. It is an important step towards achieving the vision of the Stonehenge Master Plan to provide greatly improved public access to the World Heritage Site.

English Heritage has been working closely with the National Trust, the Wiltshire Constabulary and others to put full operational arrangements in place. The key priorities are to ensure public order and safety, to protect Stonehenge and its surrounding monuments and to allow everyone who comes along to enjoy a peaceful celebration of the solstice.

Entry will be free of charge and subject to the Terms and Conditions given below.

OPENING / CLOSING TIMES

Free access will be provided to Stonehenge from 2330 hours on Tuesday 20 June until 0730 hours on Wednesday 21 June. People are advised not to arrive at the monument in advance of the opening time.

Normal visitor operations will resume at 0900 hours on 21 June.

Sunrise is at approximately 0445 hours on 21 June. At the time of sunrise, a human line will be formed to the south of the stone circle. It is hoped that, weather permitting, this will enable everyone to see the great spectacle of the sun rising over the Heel Stone, casting its rays through the monument.

PARKING

Car parking will be provided at a location just off the A303, near the A344/A360 junction and will be clearly signposted. People will be able to walk the 1 km to Stonehenge safely along the A344, which will be closed to unauthorised traffic. Subject to weather conditions, coaches and large vehicles may need to be directed to alternative parking.

The car park will open at 2300 hours on 20 June. Last admission will be at 0700 hours on 21 June. Vehicles will have to vacate the car park by 1200 hours on 21 June at the latest. People are advised not to arrive at the car park in advance of the opening time.

The Stonehenge car park next to the monument will be closed to the public. Any cars found parked illegally in the surrounding area are liable to be removed.

ROAD CLOSURES

Road closures will be in operation to ensure safe pedestrian passage to Stonehenge and allow unimpeded access in the event of an emergency. Please follow the signs as advised.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO STONEHENGE

Stonehenge is Britain’s greatest prehistoric monument and a World Heritage Site. To many, it is considered to be a sacred site. People coming to Stonehenge to celebrate the solstice are asked to take personal responsibility and show respect to the archaeological landscape and countryside.

In accordance with English Heritage’s duty of care both to members of the public and to Stonehenge and its surrounding monuments, the following Terms and Conditions of Entry will apply. These Terms and Conditions will be made clear to every person arriving at Stonehenge for the summer solstice. English Heritage reserves the right to undertake searches to ensure that the Terms and Conditions are adhered to.

Climbing on the Stones can damage the delicate lichens and, potentially, the Stones themselves.
